Help Anyone :  My 86 Red Coupe Odometer, with 62k just stopped working, or recording miles. The cluster & all the components work perfectly, tach.,speedo, oil, temp, etc. Has anyone had this problem in the past, & know how they got it fixed properly. Can I buy a new tumbler, or is it hooked to the board electronically. I know I can get at it if I take the dash pad off, but what good would that do me, until I have a remedy ? Please jump in with info & ideas, Thanks.

as far as i know there is a electronic motor that runs the mileage counter. this motor is in the back side of your cluster where your mileage counter is attached. could be it. also  i  know this isn't a common problem. i don't think its your speed sensor that is in your trans. you did say the speedo and every thing else works. have you ever had the cluster out for a rebuild?

Not that I know of. The numbers on the tumbler are all half way out of being lined up looking at you. Like when your odometer starts to change to 100,000 miles & when they are half way there, you happen to stop the car, turn off the engine, & they are stuck in time forever, in that position. You mentioned a motor in your post. Are you saying that the tumbler is attached to a little motor by a gear drive of some kind. If so, do you know if this part is available, or is it mounted to the board somehow that we are unable to replace in the field. A repair shop I called, told me he could fix it, for at least $600 & I leave the car there for around 10 days. I see A BIG FISH HOOK HANGING, & I am being reeled in very soon if I TAKE THE BAIT. More research is in order first & a few more oppinions.

You might try Ebay for the steeper motor or another speedometer Wink

600.oo wow wee this guy doesn't know anything he trying to real you in. leave your car for several days. i bet you he'll remove your cluster and send it for repairs and charge you double. there's a steeper motor on e ebay. there are plenty of guys who do great work on these clusters. you'll see them on e-bay. have you used e-bay before? i know there is a tumbler on there in the 84 vette section he wants 85.00 brand new. also i saw a steeper motor on there to around 2 days ago. if the steeper motor is sold just call or e-mail one of these guys who repair clusters I'm sure they will help you out. can you remove your cluster on your own . if you can it sure would save you a lot of bucko's.

Thanks jonnyone, for all the info. Found an odometer & stepper motor complete on Ebay as you suggested. Then found a website with pics, step by step removal of odometer unit as you said it was. Three small screws hold the entire unit in place on the back side of the cluster. This will save me a ton of cash for sure, & a very easy R&R. I will let you know how I make out when it is all done.  It is nice to have a Family of GEARHEADS around to count on with the best advice for us Old Antiques.

Well, Thanks again all of you, for the tips. I got the odometer & stepper unit the other day from Ebay. Started the R & R with the tutorial in hand. Followed the info as explained, propped the dash up a little, & the cluster slipped right out forward. This actually let me get at the 3 screws holding the unit in place, unplugged the old one, & installed the new one in 5 minutes. I forgot that I removed the back cover first to expose the cluster board, before the odometer removal.  Anyway, it took about an hour ( totally ), for the entire job. Took it down the road & watched it work again. Did not have to unplug the harnesses either, as there was plenty of room to work on it, when I laid it forward on the column. " OH HAPPY DAYS "
