My 1992 Vette convertible acted up shortly after I took it out of storage this year. I took it to a GM dealer who said the PCM was bad. They could not find one so it was sent to Texas for rebuild. It was sent there three times total and my Vette never did operate correctly. They gave up on trying to fix it and I drove it home.  Is there someone who has a positive experiance with a rebuild company? I plan on puttting it away for the winter and take the PCM out and send it away over the winter. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have not been able to enjoy my ride all summer.

Not for my Vette (fortunately) but I did get one from

www.acdelcodirect.com

for my son's SS Cobalt at better than average pricing. Had to be programmed by a dealer since I only have programs for mine at a cost of $120 but worked just fine. There was a core charge and it came with the rebuilt sticker (turns out our core had already been done too!!)

PCM's pretty much NEVER fail.  IF they do, it's pretty cut and dried that the PCM was indeed the problem.

I'm familiar with "the place in Texas". What did the place in Texas say the second and third time it came back to them? "No problem found?" If so, there most likely isn't anything wrong with the PCM. The Dealer misdiagnosed it.

What are your symptoms? What else has been done, modified, and tried as a remedy?

As far as a suggestion, if you really think your PCM is still at fault, find another car / member to swap your PCM into and see if HIS car then has the 'problem' yours does. I always substitute the 'bad' PCM into the 'good' car. That way if there's a condition in the 'bad' car that damaged the PCM, the 'good' PCM isn't damaged as well. A 'bad' PCM can't damage the car.

And just a WAG:  Optispark been addressed? If it had an MSD opti installed as a "cure' it may not be.

You're assuming the dealer actually DID send it off to be rebuilt/repaired. My bet is they didn't, and they just don't know what's wrong with the car to begin with, so they blame it on the PCM.

What issues are you having with the car anyway?

Thanks to all who replied so fast to my problem. A little more info. The PCM has stickers from the company in Texas on it. The last time they sent it back they said it was the prom chip. My dealer got another chip and installed it in the PCM and it did not correct the problems which come and go. They even tapped on the PCM and it would not operate as it should. It made them think the PCM was not rebuilt as good.  When it acted up when I did drive it, I could be moving along and it would jerk and the speedo would go to zero, the asr and service engine light came on, the A/C would not work, if I stept on it, it would NOT go it would cough, if I slowly pushed on the gas it would climb up fine. Some times it might jerk and every thing would be fine again. Never knowing how long it would last though. The last time I drove it after about 10 minutes of driveing it it kept dying and I had to restart it, I got it home and gave up on driving it. Began searching the internet for parts and assistance. I did replace the distributor (by different mechanic) and it ran great all summer and was fine when I put it into storage for the winter. I have had people tell me that problems with the PCM in 1992's are common. One shop I contacted who does alot of work on Vettes and ups horsepower on a variaty of cars said he was not interested in taking on this job. My dealer did find a person who had a PCM but wanted $1,295 for it, which is about $1,000 over what a rebuild is. Any other tips or contacts would be greatly appreciated. I plan onputting it away soon and try to get the problem solved over the winter.

Thanks

The symptoms you describe are the same as he had with the Cobalt and the ECM was producing a 601 failure code (OBD II).  I think checking the ECM codes is where I'd start, you can get a hand held for under $100.  and you'll use it all the time because it's a lot easier than shorting the pins and counting. For $1200, you might as well do the conversion to an LS 24X system.
