(Looks like I have time for 1 more!)  I noticed that there is a lot of play at the fuel injection's throttle body, where the shaft for the butterflies passes through that aluminum casting.  I see that some places stock a "rebuild kit" but the kits only have gaskets.  I was thinking that I really need to rebush the area where the shaft rotates.  I get the impression that short of replacing the unit altogether, that outfits like CARDONE will rebuild the throttle body -- seems that I can get it done through Rock Auto by Cardone for about $102 plus shipping costs.  Has anybody gone this route?  I will talk to them Monday to see if they indeed rebush or offer some other process to kill the vacuum leak going on at the shaft, but I am looking to hear testimonials of this action!                       Dan

Hi.  I wanted to submit an update...  So far, all I have been able to establish is that Cardone has done little to reassure me that they are a responsible source for rebuilding my throttle body unit.  They know little to nothing about the process they will subject the unit to, and pretty much convinced me that if they encounter out of round or oversize conditions where the shaft rotates in the throttle body unit that it will be tossed out as unfit for rebuild.  Shade tree mechanics I have spoken with feel that this is something that should easily be addressed.  And for now, I have a friend of a friend who is willing to give me an extra throttle body he has, so I can at least disassemble it and determine if there is a way I can re-bush the shaft on mine -- I am presuming that the newer one might not even have the slop issue and would probably just require a new gasket kit.  At this time it appears that plenty of the stores that appear on this site as supporting vendors have the gasket kits available and I really would rather have hands on with this project anyway.  I do notice that the BBK people mention an O ring that seals the shaft on the throttle bodies they produce.  And... that they have at least 2 different sizes of butterflies, but that's a whole new can of worms...

When I was worried about keeping cars original, but also wanted to drive it......I did buy aftermarket....all the time.

And most of the time the AM parts were tons better than the original.
I called them "service" parts.

But I kept the inferior originals in storage....lots of people do it this way.
Having AM parts on the car gave me time to tinker, clean, and perfectly rebuild the original parts.

Update:  today I helped my friend with garage projects and before I went back home he handed me the borrowed throttle body unit.  It sure looks like mine -- I understand GM put them on lots of their cars back then.  This one is filthy, but there is none of that slop I get from my clean one.  I will continue cleaning the borrowed one up, and have all of the gaskets on their way (ebay to the rescue).  I see how the idle air control works now, and although I was cautioned to just deal with the throttle body before I clean the iac and throw another variable into the mix, well, the iac is filthy and it seems stupid not to clean the thing up!  I do have another in my throttle body I could transfer over, but I haven't seen it yet as I can still drive the car.  I will probably install the borrowed one into my car and trade my clean sloppy one back.  All this to get a high idle to calm down and make the car more manageable.  At this point the idle centers around 1400 rpm for about 6-8 seconds before it finally drops back down to the idle speed.  But this also causes the cruise control to act like its adjusted for too much sensitivity, and the car isn't coding for a bad idle air control issue.  We will see...

I dumped my GM throttle body years ago in favor of a TPIS billet model. In those days I cruised e-bay and TPIS must have been fishing but in the end I got one of their 58mm TBs at a great price. This thing is jewelry and I have never had any issues with it. On top of that, it seats the butterflies better, turns smooth as glass, has better air inlet and looks great. I suggest you consider TPIS before you spend money on a re-build.

I looked up TPIS and saw that although the price was high, the units seemed to be tailored to high power output applications.  The 240 hp. car deals with 780 cfm or so, and I am happy with the fuel economy.  I am afraid that 1000 cfm might just gag the poor thing!  BBK's units mimic the OEM numbers but claim a 9 - 12 hp. increase, somehow.  I just now found a source nearby who will rebuild the throttle body (Dr. Injector) with that emphasis on the shaft bushings I was looking for.  So for now, I think I will wait and see if one or more of these suppliers offers a Black Friday thing that will affect the price of the throttle body units from BBK.  That will no doubt help me decide which way to go: to rebuild, or to replace!!!
