Hi all!

I'm looking to buy a new set of tires for my 96 CE.  I'm not sure which brand to go with.  I don't drive
in the rain or snow...so just good riding "freeway" type tires.

Thanks

Darryl

Look at tirerack.com
They have the low down on all tires as to wear, traction and cost.

just a thought here to consider. if you are going to get a performance tire only it may give you a harder ride than a passenger tire will.

87 Red Coupe, not as pretty, had 213G miles, great running engine; got 20-21 around town, 27-28 on hwy; I got to drive a Vette, every day for 6 yrs. It was my first; so now I know what the fuss is all about. (Sold it 2015 for $3000, still ran great.)

I put about 20,000 a year on mine, commuting daily, so I wanted a more realistic, longer-lasting compound, so I went with Custom "Sport XT" and got 4 mounted for $508 at a Tire Pros store.  If you're going to do high-speed curving, you'd probably want the softer, racier Goodyear, Firestone, Michelin, or Yokohama, for about twice that.  If you don't drive it much and want it to look good in the shows, the performance names look better, too.  There are lots of good choices out there at most of the big tire chains.  (Regardless, it's so fun being able to drive a Vette, no matter what kind of sneakers it runs on....)

I've always used Goodyear... ZR, GSC, and more recently the F1-GS and the all weather version. Both worked very well and relatively quiet. I've heard good things about the Michelins (cheaper) and the Continental Extreme Contact (much cheaper, but highly rated).  I agree with checking TireRack.com and reading the specs, ratings and reviews. You'll find the ones you want...

just a suggestion here. a lot of people talk about tire rack and yes they do have some good deals. my advice is check all your local tire dealers first. i just got tires for the 90. went to tire rack and it seemed to be good prices. checked on one of the places they send them to install them and for about another $50.00 got better tires (in my opinion). the tread guarantee was 60,000 instead of 30,000. when i figured the price, i didn't even figure in shipping. with the shop i went with got the extended warranty (which i would have had to pay for at tire rack anyway) and i get lifetime tire rotation and balancing which i would not have gotten if i had tire rack send them.

really got to check and actually see if you are saving that much. only way to save a lot is if you could mount and balance them yourself or if you needed just one tire. of course everything i stated is my opinion.

Dave makes some good points about Tirerack. Last year I bought 4 new Goodyear Eagle F1 GS's from a local Goodyear tire shop. I did my home work 1st and knew the prices from Tirerack and Sears. The dealer initially quoted me $1,400 out the door and I countered with the Tirerack price of around $780. They had to check with some regional manager dude and called me back the next morning and we agreed on a price close to $900 out the door.

My biggest reason for sticking with the Goodyear brand is they are made in the USA

If you're still looking -- I have Falken Ziex ZE-912 tires on my 95.  I like them and have had no issues with them.  I also looked at Tirerack but actually got a better deal locally.  Of course it doesn't hurt that I buy all my tires, and have been doing business with, the same tire store for over 20 years!

Hi everyone!
I have a 87 C4 w/ 27400 original miles. It also has the DN 4+3 and the Z51 package.
here is my HUGE(!!) problem; no one makes tires for it!! And, no, I'm not exaggerating!
I have hit every tire site online, as well as all of the dealers around me. I get the same statement from them all: "All we can find is a BF Goodrich g-Force Sport and there are none available for at least 6 months."
So, would someone explain the logic behind this?
OEM is Goodyear Eagle VR50 P255/50/VR 16.
Thanks for ANY ideas!
Bob

Hey Robert - there is a nationwide tire shortage - specialty tires have been hit the worse. Here's a recent USA Today article http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/06/automakers-complain-about-tire-shortage/1
politics politics politics as I shake my head

A tire shortage?  At least now I know why I had to wait 2 weeks for mine.  Fortunately I could wait.

I ended up getting a set of Michelin's Pilot Sport AS/plus.  They seem to be pretty good.  We'll see.
The Goodyear's were not available!  Guess there is a shortage

Thanks all

don't know if it is just a shortage or if Goodyear gave up on 16 inch tires  but every time i check the goodyear website for 16" tires for my 1988 they say do not have.......it sux cuz I'm top-flighting my car and can not put original tires on car nor does original manufacturer produce any 16 " tires at all for it so I can't even get partial points with staying with goodyear.

Were you able to find OEM sized tires. I am looking to replace tires on my 93 C4. Currently have Firestone Firehawks, front and rear. Firestone and Goodyear no longer make these in 255/45 and 285/40 sizes. Any ideas or recommendations.
Thanks

If I run my VIN I should have 285/40ZR17 on the rear and 255/45ZR17 on the front was an option.  It was explained to me the 95 came with the same size all around and you could option for a different size on the rear.  Don't know how true that is though.  One of the reasons I picked the Corvette I did was the same size tires front/back, 275/40/17.
I just checked Discount Tire and they show several brands of tires for the OEM sizes.  Don't know if you have to order them but the sizes are showing up.  I have have been really happy with the Falken Ziex ZE-912 tires I have on my Corvette.

I use Discount Tire Direct. I had a '85 Vette with  255/50Z x 16" and I purchased the Falken Ziex 512's and had no problems with them. I've purchased several sets for that car.
I now have a '96 CE which has Nitto brand tires on it when purchased the Vette. I looked at the manufactures dates on the tires which shows the front tire are 10 years old and the rear tires are 8 years old. I know, I 'need' to replace them and I will, when the tread wears down some more. Appearently this brand of tires are very good also.

What size michelins did you end up getting? How do you like them? I'm getting new tires when I out my 96 CE convertible back on the road this spring. I am having a hard time deciding what to purchase as well. Not to mention the limited choices.

Have any of you gents tried PROXIS tires?  I have a set on my car, work well and seem to stick rather well. VERY good water displacement in downpour.
