Topic: Reasons to stay with the C4 Posted: February 01 2010 at 7:18pm |
Ok why do I stay with the C4 over say a C5 or C6?
The C5 has a lot of issues. The rocking seats, bad oil sending
units, bad gas gauges, leaky rear axles and dreaded column lock.
The C6 has problems with the remote start, key fob problems,
rocking seats, auto door opening problems, and noisy targa tops.
Yes the C4 basically only has the opt-spark. So the C4 seems
more durable and plus it looks way better.

grandma would love the rocking seats . i think every generation had their quirks when first changed. surprised they didn't fix the seat issue in the c6. it seems everytime they get most of the bugs fixed they change generations and start all over again. my personal preference is c2, c3, c4. i own 2 out of the three and very hard to say one is better than the other.

Most of the "problems" of the earlier gens have been fixed by now. In 10 years, all of the "problems" with the C5s will have been fixed.... I personally prefer my Shark car over the C4, as far as driving. Yeah, the C4 gets waaaaay better mileage, and it will most likely outrun the Shark in the end, but....the '74 just fits me better. Mama prefers the C4. So....we're both happy! I would never buy a C5 at all, for any reason. Just don't like them. I've driven many different ones, and they just don't "fit" me very well. I've also worked on a ton of C5s....most of them have been driven into the ground, so no matter what you do, you still wind up with a worn out car. The above is the opinion of the poster....

Gotta keep the C4 until I can save enough for a new ZR-1.

THIS IS MERELY MY OPINION:
c4master, I am not a wealthy man and I do not like car payments, so I don't have to make decisions like which generation to "stay with". I cannot afford the luxury of owning multiple generations! I assume you own one of each? THAT must be nice!
My take is that I am an old, tired, fat cop who wants one for collectibility and enjoyment. It is an investment (ask my wife). I would rather own a beautiful, restored collectible Corvette that a "good used car". Unless it's a rare special edition, that's what they are to ME. Now.....if you're thinning your collection, post some pics. Maybe someone here will buy one.
THIS WAS MY OPINION. PLEASE DO NOT SUE ME. I HAVE NOTHING. I AM WORTHLESS.

I'm keeping my C4 until GM builds and I can afford the new concept vette unveiled this week at the Philadelphia Auto Show... What a car.. I really hope they build it. As soon as I figure out how to download pictures from my phone to here I will do it. As far as C4's are concerned, in my humble opinion(IMHO going forward) the C4 has been the best design to date..

I hear widely differing opinions on the C4. During the "cash for clunkers" where they actually destroyed some decent early C4s, some people said they were ugly. I disagree strongly. My '86 coupe has styling that I think is much better than either the C5 or C6. I bought my '86 new and I enjoy it more each year. Sure there have been a few problems such as the alternator, starter, and ECM but nothing I consider major considering it has close to 90K miles and is 24 years old.

Every generation has it's "issues". Most vette owners have a gut reaction to what gen turns them on, much like woman, so ya gotta respect their choice. So I don't bash anyone's gen, hey it's a vette and we all have to deal with the quirks that are built into the experience of owning one. There isn't any vette I would turn down, but I might not have the passion I have for the C4. Love the corkpit, clamshell...hate #8 plug , changing wires and the dana 36.
But I gotta admit, a new GS 'vert in torch red, with whatever issues it may have, really makes me think about cheating on my car .

Im not bashing any year vettes, but the facts are the facts.
Over-all the C4 seems to have less issues than a C5 or C6.
Long Live the C4!!!!!!!!

In 1987 I owned an import auto parts store and had been following the development of the C4. I agreed with most of the writers who felt the Corvette had finally achevieved a world class auto. I do my own work and love the way the clamshell hood exposes the entire front for access. I was on my 4th MG at the time and love a small tight car. In 2007, after 45 yrs of riding motorcycles (mostly BMWs), I rode from VT to FL in Oct and instead of enjoying the Blue Ridge Pkwy it rained and was cold all the way to the FL border. I said it's time for my Corvette. I looked for months for the right C4 because I wanted the clamshell hood, 96in wheelbase, and felt like the C5's looked like they had fat hips. I found my 96 (I wanted OBD-II electronics to ease maint) with the LT4 motor (love the rpm and engine development) with the FE1 suspension because I want to be able to drive the car in comfort. I've driven 12,000 miles since last April and love the car. I look at it waiting in the driveway and love the lines. I average 28mpg on trips and about 15 in townand I know 300000 miles from now I'll have to give up driving anyway. This C4 is it!

Good question. Understand that's just a gesstimate. The car has 56,000 now. My artificial left hip makes it difficult to get in and out of the C4 so most of my miles will be on another BMW bike due this summer. About 2 hours in the car puts both legs to sleep and in pain but I find I can still ride all day so an electric vest will make the cold go away..LOL Dave

Just aquired my C4...Ask me is next October. I can already say there is NO comparison between my shark and the C4. C4 is orders of magnitude better. I am not really a fan of the C5 or C6. I cannot get past the fact that the front of the C5 looks like an older firebird on steroids. With apologies to the C1, I think corvettes should have retractable headlights. The C6 lines just don't seem quite right to me. That said, the C6, however, is the best perfromance/grand touring car buy on the planet. Just an opnion...

Though this is my first Vette, so no expert, just a fan, this 87 C4 seems pretty great for a daily driver. I go almost 2000 miles a month, get 23 on commute and 25 or 26 on highway trips, so it's an econo-sled that beats my wife's V-6 2006 wagon and daughter's 4 cyl turbo PT Cruiser! My old Corvette needed a little work, but for $6500 and about $3000 in fixes, it is a cheap and affordable sports car that is so fun to drive that I now appreciate what all of you had already known.
It's its own reward. I can only guess that the newer C5 and C6 ones are great, too, but they're all Corvettes and I suspect that each series drives like a cat, an American cat, and we at least know how to drive an American muscle car.
I love driving mine and I love looking at the others, so we are all lucky to be in this predicament!

I have C2,C3,C4, and C6 generations. They all have their own different characteristics that I enjoy at different times. Everything from thumbs up to nostalgia to great mileage to different comfort levels. When it comes time to down size, I really don't know which would be the first to go. The 84 has had no problems at 32,000 miles. It was the first I ordered new so will probably be around for some time.

Hey, Poolman, just enter your own cell or home number into your cell phone, then add your email address to your entry and then open your picture and forward it to yourself at your email and it will appear as a .jpg picture that you can save on your computer and then email to anyone or to a Website. Good luck and enjoy the Vette. I have my first, an 87 with almost 140G miles on it, paid $6500 and added about $3000 to get it up to snuff. Drive it 80-90 miles a day and get 23+ mpg and feel lucky to be able to drive a Corvette every day and to think of it as an econo-commuter!

Vette(s): I have a 1996 Collector Edition coupe with the LT4 engine. Looks and runs like new with 24000 miles on it. 203 coupes were imported to Canada for 1996 and only 83 of them had the Z15 option. Don't know how many of those had the LT4 engine.

I got my first Corvette last year after hankering for one since I can recall. I really enjoy the body styling. It's smooth and flows together well yet it is not over bearing and easily identified as a Corvette. Looks like a rolling sculpture sitting there.
The clam shell hood is great to access the engine/suspension and I like the fuel filler in the middle allowing me to fill from either side. A small thing, true, but satisfying especially when one is in a hurry!
All in all, I'm happy with the car and think it's beautiful, especially in the silver paint.

If it doesn't have 4 tail lights, then it's just another car.

Last night I replaced a bad amplifier in one of the rear Bose speakers. During disassembly, it occurred to me the NASA Space Shuttle engineers require their employees to be interns on the Corvette design team. I love my Vette, but some of the design work really makes me scratch my head at times <just venting>
Gettin nice outside!
