I just bought my 84 a few months ago. The previous owner mounted 17" wheels from a newer C4 and he gave me the original 16" rims as well. Am I asking for trouble leaving the 17" rims on? Every time I hit a dip or bump, the rear tires scrape just a bit on the inside edge. Should I add spacers or check to see if I can just cut a bit off the area scraping or go back to 16's? With the lousy weather and no garage, I have not had a good look at the problem.

don't know if you could or would want to cut the inner wheel well cover as i dont think it would add much space. is it hitting on the top or the sides? if it is the sides maybe a little thinner of a tire would do the trick.

What size tires are on them? That might be the problem.
The off-set on the 17" rims was different than the 16" rims, so it's probably pushing the rim/tire combo in too far....
I wouldn't recommend the use of spacers at all, but that's just my opinion. Maybe you could raise the rear ride height just a little, and keep them from rubbing, without looking too goofy?

WinkI've had my 86 coupe since new and that summer I put KYB on her. These shocks for the money are worth every penny. I also have O.Z. racing wheels on her 17-9.5 and again no issues.
Thanks tlg

I'll check the tire size as soon as I dig my vette out of the snow. I'll be home Friday late afternoon just in time for another 3-5". And more forecast for Saturday. I  haven't had her out for a couple weekends now. Cry
I'm getting Corvette fever, I'm afraid. Wacko

The sad thing is you have to dig it out of the snow and dont have cover..  We all get the fever this time of year, thats why I took mine out for a nice cruise yesterday knowing we are getting hammered with snow this weekend.

Well, at least there is a good cover on it since I don't have a garage. It wasn't a garage car when I bought it but it still looks good for an outside vette.

87 Red Coupe, not as pretty, had 213G miles, great running engine; got 20-21 around town, 27-28 on hwy; I got to drive a Vette, every day for 6 yrs. It was my first; so now I know what the fuss is all about. (Sold it 2015 for $3000, still ran great.)

I got my 87 last year and it had 17" rims from a later C4 year, probably in early 90's.  It had 275/40 R 17 tires all around, but I had one go bad and bought two used ones that are a bit smaller, 245/45 R 17.  The rear ones are 11" wide, front 10".  Haven't seen or heard any problem with the 17 size or with either width.

OK, just dug my 84 out and checked tire size. They are 285/40ZR17 on the rear. Original OEM tires are 255/45ZR17. I suspect they are just a bit too wide but I'll have it put on a lift ASAP and take a look.  When it's time to buy new tires, I'll have to get narrower tires if needed. Comments welcome.
Thanks
Wayne

Like a nice I'm newer to the forum my name is Matt I have a 1984 Corvette. Erase this Vette in autocross a 17 inch wheels that is 11 inches wide rim with a 36 offset. The offsets is Key to not only ensure the proper spacing but to help prolong the life of your wheel bearings. I run 315×35×17 Hoosier autocross tires all the way around the car. The rear is fine however I get just a little bit of rubbing in the front but I'm okay with that to run the bigger tires. So you may need to pick up some spacers for your later style rims because they do have a different offset

I have a 1986 C4, Z51, with 17" wheels from a 93. I am running 275/40-17 BFG-R1 tires for SCCA time trials/hillclimbs.  I have no issues with it, but did get the Corvette specific 1" spacers from EZAccessories for it.  These are billet aluminum, and hub centered just like the wheels - so a good tight fit.  Once bolted on - you then have the studs from the spacer to bolt the wheels on - so it isn't like the spacers from the autoparts store that just lay over your existing studs.

I have another friend competing with 315s on similar wheels using these spacers and they work fine on his as well.  Several thousand competition miles on both cars with no issues. http://www.ezaccessory.com/Hub_Centric_Wheel_Adapter_5_Lug_4_75_Corvette_p/5475-5475hv.htm

I have 275 on front and 315 on rear. Front showing some wear. These Nuttos seem a little twitchy (alignment is good). One Z06 owner tells me that Michelins made a huge difference. But they are also three times the price of almost anything else.
