I know many of your guys own both C4's and C3's as I will soon.
This gal needs some help from the experts. I have a hand shake agreement to buy an '82 with a manual 4 speed. I know, I know, all the books & online sources say that only the 700R4, 4 speed auto was available in '82. I'm buying the car from the original owner that claims it was a Special Order car and saw it roll off the carrier at the dealer's. Interestingly, there were two other cars on the carrier with the same option.
Does anybody know how many 4 speed manual cars were produced as Special Order cars in 82????
I asked Bowling Green a week ago, and so far I have no response. A telephone call to the Corvette Museum staff just quoted the literature. NCRS website is hosed so no way to ask them yet.

have you tried the VIN decoder under research at the top. in most cases, it tells how many were produced with a certain option.

Eddie,
Thanks for the tip. Now it's even more curious. The decoder shows the car with an L-98 vs the "only engine used for 82" as the L-83. However no mention of the transmission. The "Black Book" states that 4 speeds were again available in the '84's. They were the 4+3's and "were not available early". Well certainly 1982 would be considered "early" so I have no idea what may be in the car. Can't wait to get her home & jack her up & grab some numbers off the tranny.

So the mystery deepens. I'll post more info as I get it.

According to the Corvette Black Book, no manual transmissions were available in 1982, in either base or Collector Edition models.
Sure it's not a '81?jimmymack2010-09-27 09:51:55

The VIN decodes as an 82 with a L-98, built in Bowling Green.

The L98 did not come into being until the '85 model year. ALL '82 model Corvettes had the Crossfire Injection engine, the L83...there were no other options. There is NO CHANCE of anything other than the engines and the 700R4 trans being carried over to the '84 cars, or being "brought up" for use in the '82 Corvette. They are two totally different cars.
Please post the first part of the VIN here, and we can decipher it. NO need for the last 5 numbers, just the beginning.

87 Red Coupe, not as pretty, had 213G miles, great running engine; got 20-21 around town, 27-28 on hwy; I got to drive a Vette, every day for 6 yrs. It was my first; so now I know what the fuss is all about. (Sold it 2015 for $3000, still ran great.)

Here's the first part of the VIN 1G1AY878XC5
Todays research effort seems to be leading to the possibility of an Illinois dealer installed "Special Order" package. One viable possiblity is an L81 paired with a CC coded Warner 4 speed. That config was in the '81 (non California car) & obviously passed EPA muster. Hopefully the car wiil be at my house this weekend for a thorough inspection. The owner keeps trying to get it here but something always messes up her plans. Until then, the car is just "vapor".
