I just purchased a 1988 C4 convertible and took it to a friend that just opened his shop car looked good underneath no rust or leaks but he said the transmission was a Jarvis transmission so much for any value appreciation.  I did not buy it for that just my first corvette that I finally got.

Cr is in great shape body, interior and top.  I did by some new rubber and had a chance to drive it for about 300 miles it runs good.  My question is this Jarvis transmission as good as the original?  The car has 68000 miles on it and the transmission was replaced I have bad feelings on this car.

I definitely paid too much but no fool like and old fool.

Take Care.

I can't tell where you live, and sure wouldn't be driving a car top down around here, but I Googled Jarvis out of curiosity and wonder if it wasn't just serviced by an outfit called Jarvis, in So. Cal...
I wouldn't be so quick to be apprehensive over something like an aftermarket transmission, anyway.  Enjoy the car and find out about its history, and Jarvis' history.
An example -- I was initially happy with my new purchase -- in October.  Since then, I am in the winter - cabin fever - mode and going through what I want in order to have the car straightened out for the shows in 2017.  Nothing major -- I am just an owner / enthusiast, and not very mechanically inclined, but want to not worry about coolant issues, etc.  So...  as I dig around, I am beginning to find weird things that point to people monkeying around under the hood and changing things, probably in order to get the car to test well in its old home in California.  Doesn't mean that it runs poorly, but it might have in the past.  A car that is this much fun to drive would appreciate having poor functions repaired.  So enjoy your new car, and congratulations!
So far I am wondering why I am the only one in the country that has a hose that has a reinforced "T" under the air conditioning components, and why the manuals don't reflect that.  And... there is the driver's side front marker light with a goofy bulb socket that doesn't match the one on the other side...  Then, the fact that there is not one chip on the hood paint.  Car has 141,000 miles on it.  Then there's the sport seat option listed under my console lid, but the seats aren't sport seats.  I like the way my car ended up -- it looks nearly new.  But...  somebody monkeyed with it to keep it looking good, and I feel he was pretty resourceful doing it.  I think you did okay!  I get the impression that the more C4s we can get straightened out the better for the automotive community.  I like mine.

Thanks for the feed back I love the car I need to fix a couple of issues my gas gauge does not work I need to buy a sending unit which is the gauge float and fuel pump and the radio needs to be looked at no sound at speakers not even a crackle and then the cool button needs to be fixed.  My only mechanical abilities are with old vw bugs they were easy to work on the C4 is way out of my league.

I live in New England, Westfield Ma it's in my garage waiting for spring. As you said these are fun cars. We got a foot of snow yesterday and we will hit a deep freeze tonight.

Take care !!!

As did Katanaman, I googled Jarvis and could find out little about it other than it might be a servicing operation.  As to aftermarket rebuilds, some are just excellent; some years ago my Son's Jeep Grand Cherokee 318 lost oil pressure and ended up seized;  his garage installed a Jasper rebuild, and that engine not only felt stronger, but yielded better fuel economy as well.  Some of these C4's can be nearly 29 yrs old at this point and have needed servicing of some sort to keep them road-worthy;  as long as that servicing has been done properly you probably don't need to worry about it.  Enjoy your "new" ride.

Congratulations on your '88 Red Convertible!!  I have had my '88 Dark Red Convertible for about 4 years and have had a ball with it.
If I were you, I wouldn't be too afraid of making some minor repairs and upgrades to the car that are relatively simple to perform.  For example, you would be surprised at how easy it is to remove the dash bezels to get access to your radio and AC controls.  Adding Daytime Running Lights (DRL) is also not that difficult to add as is a backup camera.

I would recommend a paperback that you might be interested in purchasing for some of these projects.  It is from Motorbook Workshop and is called "Weekend Projects for Your Modern Corvette C4 - C5 -C6" by Tom Benford.  It provides some general information about how to maintain your car and upgrades that are possible.  It also shows what tools you would need for each project as well as the skill level required, the approximate cost and the time required to perform each project.

I used to live outside of Hartford CT and the driving weather for my 66 Mustang Convertible was not very long compared to our Arizona climate.  Anyway, I hope you have fun with your new toy in spite of the weather issue in western MA.

I don't want to alarm you but GM (and all the other auto company's) will used re-manufactured engines and transmissions when they have to replace a defective one even under warranty. And I could be wrong but Jarvis maybe a company that re-mans for them. I have been retired for 10 years now, but I was heavily involved in the powertrain manufacturing process and this was a common practice back then and maybe still is.

Thanks for the info.  I have removed my radio as it needs to be looked at and took out the climate control to check out the cool button that sticks. There was a video showing how to clean the buttons but my unit did not have screws it had like plastic knobs and I was not sure they were really knobs or part of the circuitry.

I love the car but you are correct the season is very short here in New England,

Take care!!!
