I have a 1984 Z51 coupe that has the s/n of 2101. It has 107000 miles on the clock, BUT, I am a member of NCRS and in 2008 I took it to have it judged and got a "Top Flight" award. It is all original except for the battery and a top hose on the radiator, right down to the "gaterback" tires. I wonder if there are any lower s/n  84"s around. It was the 1st vette in my hometown  as it had been ordered our dealer as his personal car. Would really appreciate any feed-back on this.

100,000+ miles and still has the original tires?!? I have to assume the tires have not been on it all this time?
I have seen pics of '84's with VINs in the low 100s. Some of the really early builds had minor differences in parts/trim that definitely make them unique, such as the inside door handles, the plastic wheel wells(front and rear), and the rubber seals around the front wheel wells.
Nice to know you have a low mile, early car that is still in good condition.... Congrats!

my 1984...vin 2101..has all those 1983 1/2 items. it was ordered by our chevvy dealer very early on.  it is so early that it did not have the belstien shocks , the plastic roof or the straight shift availiable, but does have the stainless steel exhaust system still on it.  the dealer had ordered it for himself and being a personal friend, he finally relented and sold it to me after I had nagged him every day for a week since I had seen it. it was the only 84 in town for a couple of weeks and it really got a lot of attention, and still does.

How many digits in the VIN determine the build sequence? My VIN ends in 103730, I think that means it was the 3,730th. I have all the records on the car. It was sold in June of 1983 and registered in Houston, Tx for the first time on June 25, 1983.  I always tell people that this is an anniversary year car, even though GM sold it as a 1984 model.  I think that all C4's actually sold during 1983 should be recognized as 30 year anniversary cars. Petition?

My car was featured by the previous owner in America's Sport Car, then a small book put out by Peterson Publishing Company. The pictures were taken in South Florida as the book was being authored.

the official sn sequence is 510000. my vette is 5102101. it is a 1983 1/2 like yours, I have publication pictures that show it was to be a 1983 anniversary sales model. there are pictured a 1953, 1963, 1973, and a 1983(4) all in a row. some production problems precluded this plan from happening, so they released it as the 1984 at the half YEAR, THEREFORE GAVE US A 18 MONTH 1984.

Uh, not true. The 'sequence number' is the last 5, positions 13-17 . (You don't have enough zeros after your '5,1' in the above example. There should be 5.). The "5" in position 11 is the Assembly Plant,  Bowling Green KY. The "1" in position 12 is a little more difficult to explain, and understand.

IF there is only ONE carline produced at that particular assembly plant in that model year, there will be a "1" in this position. If other carlines are produced, there will be a different number, but it is almost always not the next increment, like "2". Here's why:  If the last-5 of the sequential get to 99,999 then the "1" will increment to "2"00000 which would be interpreted as the 100,000 vehicle in the sequence for that particular carline. As an FYI, the Cadillac XLR which was also produced in Bowling Green on a separate assembly line (NOT interspersed with Corvettes) has a "6" in the 12th position as its carline designator.

While there are other positions in the VIN that give specific information to identify certain attributes of the particular VIN such as make, country of origin, engine, body type, etc; the GM system uses the last 8 of the VIN to identify ONE specific car. The first 9 positions are not needed. Position 10= year model. (Narrows it down quick doesn't it?) Position 11 = Assembly Plant.  Position 12 = Carline in that plant. Position 13-17, the unique 5 digit sequence number of that carline, built in that plant, in that model year.

So there you go. The "sequence number" is the last 5 of the VIN. Not the last 7. And any individual car can be identified by the last 8 of its VIN.



Federal Standards stipulate that there can only be ONE March 1st during a Model Year production run. The 1984 Corvette was released for Retail Sale on March 15, 1983 in California, and April 1st, 1983 for the rest of the country. The 1984 Model was produced until July 1984. So there was only ONE "March 1st" in the model year, and it met Fed Regs. It is true 1983 Corvettes were produced, and VIN'd as such, however NO 1983 Corvettes were released for Retail sale. The one surviving 1983 Corvette is on display at the NCM. It is white in color, and has the never-released 15" "base wheels".
