Try spraying the mast with it all the way up, with some WD40(or similar product), and then wipe it down well. Sometimes the sections just get a little crap in there, and they need a little lubrication. Also, make sure it's not bent, or tweaked a little at the top.

I have the same problem with my '94. Since I can't stand broadcast radio anymore, I put in an antenna kill switch and forced the mast down
. I usually travel with an MP3 player coupled through the cassette player.

Same prob on my '94ZR-1. Have been told either replace the entire antenna system, or as a minimum the nylon tracking strip. Have tried all cleaning/lube ideas mentioned. I now just have a routine of when I leave the car and walk around left rear, quick hand on the mast that's stopped 1-2 inches above base and push it down...

I had the same problem on my '96. The factory service manual under Audio Systems section 9A-13, Antenna Cleaning says to turn on system to extend antenna then wipe antenna with a clean cloth dampened with mineral spirits. Wipe around the joins especially. Then cycle antenna and clean several times. I did this with mine and it works fine now. Dave

PS: I do this every couple of months or if it doesn't retract completely.
Well one reason I LOVE this forum is b/c everybody gets involved. Based on my experiences, all of these answers are correct depending on the antenna itself. If the motor and internals are good, smear wax, WD40, lube on the mast. If the motor doesn't cycle, you may as well pull the wheel and wheel liner, and replace it with a FACTORY assembly. I have replaced these numerous times, and in my opinion, the aftermarket universal assemblies are not worth the time to install. The $200. ones have been for me.
