After a couple weeks of comparing prices and material I have finally ordered the weather stripping for my C-4. I am going to take the plunge and get this knocked out. I got the 6 piece kit from Zips Corvettes, the 2 pieces for the ends of the dash, the 3M adhesive and adhesive remover. Can anyone think of anything else I will need to do this job? I have enlisted the help of a friend that has done a couple of complete off the frame restorations on Vettes, and we plan on doing this ourselves. Any advice or ideas? I know there are short cuts and "Tips" that make these things easier, I will be using the Chilton's Manual and the Chevrolet Service manual on my car for instructions, but short cuts and tips are certainly welcome....

a case of beer should be on the top of the list.Beer i replaced all the gaskets on mine when it was repainted. not that bad. not sure of the two pieces you have for the ends of dash. i had the a & b pillar, door gaskets. and rear window gasket. i took a small scraper and ground it down to fit in the channels which after you get the a & b pillar gasket off, you can unscrew and work more comfortably. also a small wire brush that's about a 1/2" wide. one other thing allan, you may want to read the manuals before you do it instead of afterwardsRolling On The Floor Laughing

I have replaced the door gaskets on my 1986 Coupe, and there wasn't any adhesive at all on the originals.  Not a trace.  I didn't use any on the new gaskets when i installed them.  I don't know about the other gaskets though.

pins hold the door gaskets on and there is no glue. the only glue is on the a & b pillar gaskets and the gaskets on the top. rear window is just pushed on.

just one other note. after you install the new gaskets it will be harder to close doors. when i did my doors we just latched the door in the first position for a day and the closed them fully. the rear window (without the gas charges) only closed to a space of about 12" from body. left it like that and next day was down to about 3". we then pushed it closed the rest of the way.

I just bought a new roof so I don't have to do those, and the rear window is in perfect condition so I am not doing that one. Just doing the doors, Door/dash, A pillars with the windshield, and B Pillar. But that is good information on the doors, No adhesive on the doors, got it.

allan,
you should have only 4 pieces of weatherstripping to install. the a pillar gasket goes acoss and down the sides where it will butt up against the door gaskets sealling the inside from the outside. the b pillar gasket is basically the same. dont know what gaskets you are you are talking about for the dash.

Open the door, look where the A-pillar meets the dash board. There is a piece of stripping there that goes from about the top of the floor carpet, up and along the A-pillar, and disappears under the A-pillar trim, just about where the A-Pillar and windshield stripping ends. It is a short piece about a foot and a half long. there is one on each side.

here they are from Zips:

And here on Ecklers:

I have some minor water running down the side of the dash on the passenger side when I get caught in a heavy down pour (Which I did yesterday), it is probably just the door stripping, but no sense in taking a chance, just do them both while I am doing it.

I used Xylene (home Depot) to remove all of the old adhesives. I used several different size putty knives to get the majority of the weather stripping off, but I didn't want to scratch the metal channels. The Xylene applied with a parts cleaning brush works well with lots of shop rags spread around to catch any dripping. After 30 minutes of repeated soaking, the old adhesives come right off and the channels looks brand new. If you use the Xylene, be sure your area is well ventilated !
