I have a 90 roaster with 60K miles.  It is inexcellent condtion with regards to the body and interior.  That being said, the engine and engine compartment is in dire need of cleaning!  It is an L98 (not LT1) with magnesium components.  Has anyone had any experience in getting the engine cleaned?  I have been told that oil based cleaners would cause coloring damage on the magnesium covers and etc. and steam was out of the question because it is so difficult to protect components from "shorting".  Does this mean there is no solution short of dissasembling engine??

Simple Green (both the green and blue version), lots of rags, HD paper shop towels, some cheap toothbrushes, case of beer and a few hours of hard scrubbing oughta make a big difference. No damage, except fpr your knuckles.

Well...my fear was that this would be the most viable alternative!  I was trying to find an easy way out but certainly appreciate your feedback.  Looks like I will need a few pair of gloves as well.phew

I have washed mine with my powerwasher. I just covered the Dist. worked fine for me. Its and L98 I even did my last vette was an LT1. Then I polished it by hand and loads of sweat.

I would cover any air intakes as well before power washing. And, of course, the engine should not be hot.

That certainly makes sense! Thanks for your feedback.  I did think about disconnecting the battery and covering electrical boxes and visible connections.... but forgot about intake system

Vette(s): 1990 Corvette Transfroming into Drag Car
I have a 90 and what I did with mine was to spray it all with simple green and let it soak.... then hit it again and use a scrub brush on any stubborn spots.  Then I decided it was about rinse time so I started the car and with it idling, and making sure to stay away from the air cleaner area, I rinsed mine with a hose.  Then ran it around the block, and pulled it into the garage.  One it was there I put it up on jack stands and each evening, I started whiping down a section at a time until it was clean.

Right now the engine and trans are out of mine and I used a steam cleaner under there, and still after powerwashing and all, I have had to go under and go after parts with a tooth brush or scrub brush (Depending on what fit) and cleaned everything.  I am going to paint everything before putting all of it back together so I will make sure it is all cleaned, and all the wiring is routed and clean runs as well.  Since I am converting this car to a twin turbo car with Meth Injection, and 4 stages of NOS, there is going to be need for a very clean install of everything to keep me happy.  I am going to post pics of my build in here sooner or later.
