I'm thinking about buying a blue tinted lexan top for my '84. I have seen a lot for sale on eBay and Craigslist, but how do I know if I am getting an OEM top? Are there any distinguishing marks on the OEM ones? Or are there better reproduction ones to buy? Are there any helpful hints of what to look for when buying a targa top, or specific brands to stay away from? I know that there are differences in the mounting, but I am just not sure how to tell if I am getting a quality top or a peice of junk. Also, how much should I expect to pay? There are ranges from $250 (with bad weatherstripping) all the way up to $1250. Any feedback would be appreciated!

i hope the $1250 price you see is for a new top as that is about what they go for. i have a blue one piece top for my 75 that i got from astro tops off of ebay. have no real complaints about it except for storage if i go anywhere and want to take it off.
the top for my 90 cracked last summer and got a new one thru the insurance company. dont really know the company they got it from but it was a new and it was nice to look out of a new top than the 20 year old i had. the only thing that seemed to be a bit off was the weatherstripping. at the back end looked like it wasn't molded correctly but that may be me being too critical.
the only thing i can tell you for sure is that if you get a brand new top, DON"T use windex or anything like that on it. they say the best is warm soapy water. that way you shouldn't get all that "spider cracking" ( techno-term?) in it. hope you get what you want.

I bought mine from Astro tops, they are located in Florence AL. and will cut you a better deal if your able to drive to them, or if you catch them at a car show (Which they do a lot of) here is their web site. I have been happy with it so far......

Did you ever decide on where to get top? I live near Bristol PA so I am aving East Coast do mine this week ( I have some other issues leaving car). If you haven't already replaced yours I can let you know how I made out.

that's a good point jbz makes. there are three different type mounts on the tops. there are a lot of people that list it as fitting the whole c4 class.

You can see an illustration of the 3 types on Eckler's web site. use piece 30254 and on the bottom of the picture they show the 3 types. It also confirms you are correct about the 3 sizes. If I was more handy with computer I would scan and send but not that good anymore.
