Cannot get trans. out of park. Any suggestions

A little more info might help...
Year model?
Does the button on the top of the shifter move down when you press on it?
Depending on the year, can you hear a "click" from the shifter area when you press on the brake pedal?
Have you tried pushing forward on the shifter while pressing the button?
Does the shifter move, but the trans stays in Park?

I have the same problem with 1994 automatic.  The car starts.  It is parked in the garage on a flat surface.  But the button on the shifter won't push in.  Steering wheel is locked as well.  Tried putting foot on and off brake...shutting it off, then on again and the button still won't push in.

The steering wheel being locked is puzzling...might have two separate issues going on there.
First, I would suggest checking ALL of the fuses, as far as the shifter problem. I think the '94 should have the "Press Brake Before Shifting" feature, but I'm not 100% sure on that. If it does have that feature, you should be able to hear the shift release relay "click" every time you press on the brake.
As before, try pushing forward on the shifter with the key on, before pressing the brake. Sometimes, the pin that locks the shifter can get bound up if there is any undue pressure on it, and it will not release when pressing on the brake.
Any kind of spillage of liquids(soda, coffee, Jack Daniels, etc) into the console can also stick the shift release pin on the shifter.
The steering being locked up is just weird...is that something that just happened, or have you been having some trouble with it before? The steering wheel lock is purely mechanical...
Did both of these problems occur at the same time?

There's a cable from the shifter to the back side of the column with locking mechanism as part of the anti-theft. If you can't pull the shifter out of park, you can't unlock the column. The button and brake are both required to release a solenoid that holds it in park so you can't start it in gear (safety requirement). The button is a mechanical linkeage to farther down electrical switch. I'm not sure if the brake light swithch also powers the shifter logic or if it is separate (without going to the shop manual). Makes sense that it would but GM isn't always so inclined. Getting the console apart to get at the components is something of a chore. You'll need some good snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring below the button ( which just pops up with a some careful prying). Once you get the knob off, the console glove box top, screws (metal and plastic types including some under the coffee holder), hatch button, the top of the console comes apart from the back in three pieces. You'll then be able to expose the shifter and cables and soleniod. You'll need to jumper to the solenoid power lead because it won't move manually, it's pretty strong. That will release the shifter (if it energizes). If not, changing it is something of a chore but possible. Finding the short you'll be on your own unless it's just the fuse!
