Carrier bolt-what is this for?

Can anyone tell me what the purpose of this bolt at the back of an '87 carrier is for?  I Unscrewed it thinking it was to drain the carrier which it turns out it is not for that.  I noticed there was a "rubber like" calking at the end of the bolt threads.  I would like to know what the purpose of this bolt is before I screw it back in.  Also, I guess there is no drain plug right?

Thanks a lot for any help you can provide.

John

Not a very clear pic, but I'm gunna guess it is one of the bolts holding the rear cover/batwing to the diff. The rubbery stuff is silicon.
And yes, you are correct...no drain plug in the diff. There are kits available to allow you to drill/tap a hole in the bottom for a drain, if you want. Otherwise, you need to get the diff hot(drive for a while), then use a suction pump/gun to draw the old lube out. When changing the diff lube, be SURE to add in a couple bottles of Posi additive. Thumbs Up

The process for drilling and tapping is very doable. Rinsed mine out twice with carb cleaner, let it drain, put the new plug. Added the two bottles of GM anti slip ointment and drove in figure 8's for about 15 minuets. my noise was gone and clutches work very well.
