Have a 92 6 speed. Get some grinding sometimes when going from 1st to 2nd if I'm going slow. If I'm going fast it goes from 1st to 2nd no problem. I may not be pulling my stick down and to the left enough. The owners manual said that if you don't keep pressure to the left it can cause problems because springs want to pull the shifter towards the center (3rd and 4th gears). Any thoughts?? Thanks

The "Skip Shift" feature can certainly cause problems like this. You can dis-connect the solenoid, but...if you are able to shift from 1st to 2nd at slow speeds, it's prolly already been disconnected.
Might try changing the fluid in the trans, and see if that helps any. IT may not. Chances are, the damage is done already, and the trans needs to be repaired. Make sure the clutch is fully dis-engaging, too. Check the fluid level in the master cylinder reservoir. Make sure you floor mat(if you have one) is not keeping the pedal from going all the way down.

Don't seem like it's damaged. I think I just need to get used to shifting in this vehicle. When I take off normally there isn't any problem. I just thought it was a quirk for these cars and wondered if anybody has had this issue.
The problem I've been having is that when I take off slow the shifter will not move down to second. It's like it is blocked. If I let the stick go to neutral then pull it down to second it works fine. If I take off fairly fast getting up to @ 2500 to 3000 RPM it shifts in to second with no problem. I've been looking on the internet and exchanging emails with a CF6 expert and he told me there is a CAGS solenoid that blocks the shifter from going to second when the car is under a light load. This was put in place by GM engineers to get by the gas guzzler tax. On a pre model all you have to do is disconnect the CAGS solenoid and this problem will go away. Any thoughts? Does anybody have a picture of this solenoid as it is located on the transmission? Thanks
Hummmm, maybe the Auto Trans isn't such a bad deal after all....

The Skip Shift/CAGS(computer aided gear selection) function was purely a way for GM slide the Corvette(and Camaro/Fireturd) past the EPA's fuel mileage and emissions regulations. In reality, it's a silly idea. It basically makes ya wanna hammer the throttle every time you take off, so you can hit all the gears. How's that helping the fuel mileage, eh?
The solenoid is mounted on the driver side of the shift tower of the trans. There are actually two solenoids in that area. The CAGS solenoid, and the reverse lock-out solenoid. Can't remember off the top of my head which one is which...I'll have to look and see. You can simply unplug it and be fine.
