Vette(s): 1989 Convert. It's HERE ! ! ! This is my first 'Vette. Most likely my last toy as I am 71 years old.
All of a sudden the headlights, both of them, have started to open up 1/2 way then stop.. They always close correctly. When the hood is up they open correctly and won't close. Sounds like maybe a gear slippage problem ? Then they work correctly ? ? ? Any help would be appreciated..
Oh yes, they do not both work the same, one will work 3/4 and one 1/2 but they switch sides.....
Thanks.....

the motors are almost like a window motor. inside the gear there are three bushings that wear and will cause that condition. you can get replacement bushings from ecklers, etc and even the gears too. there is an adjustment screw but that shouldn't be adjusted until after you replace the bushings which are most likely the culprit.
not that hard to replace but you have to remove the headlight assy from the hood. about six nuts and it will come out. when you do it turn on the headlights to the open position and then disconnect the neg. terminal of battery. unplug the assy (2 plugs on each unit) and follow instructions that should come with new bushings. when done replacing bushings make sure the headlight is in open position and reinstall on car. plug the assy back in and reconnect battery. turn off light switch and lights should close properly. good luck.

I had the same symptoms show up and operating the headlights got worse very quickly. I bought new bushings from Ecklers just like Eddie said and that solved the problem. When I took the unit apart, the old bushings were ground down to dust. They are made of nylon and wear out with time and use. About a year after doing one headlight, the other one went bad so I got to do the project twice. Each time it took about 6 hours from start to finish. I've heard several people say it's a quick job but it sure didn't work out that way for me. In my opinion, it's a straight forward fix but is a bit tedious getting at the mounting bolts from multiple angles which eats up some of the time. After cracking open the motor housing to get at the bushing, I found it tricky to get everything lined back up, so that chews up a little more time too. Have fun, Dave
One note of caution is to follow the instructions carefully regarding the headlamp relay assembly. It is very specific as to the sequence of hooking up the headlights, connecting the battery and so on. I fried mine the first time I did this job by not paying attention carefully enough to the instructions (who ever reads those anyways). Got my parts from MidAmerica motorworks and it went fine other than that - even upgraded to the brass gears.
There is no problem a little horsepower can't fix!

before you go to a lot of trouble, make sure you check your wiring through and through, especially the ground wire, this oddly enough times is the cause.

Well I finished the headlight re-build today after three days of part time work. I never did disconnect the battery as I unplugged the lights and motor first. The job was not to bad and as noted elsewhere the bushings in both headlights were ground sand. I got my kit form 'Top Down Solutions' for $25 and it included , 3 gaskets, 2 bolts & nuts, a packet of grease and 6 bushings, enough for both headlights. The only problem I had was the pass side gear would not come out. I had to force it wth the vise and a bar. Seems that the worm gear was mated so llose that the flange on the bottom of the gear would not pass. I had to cut 4 notches in the flange and fit them to the worm gear to get it back together. The lights work as they should now and I am happy with the results. Thanks for all the good advice from you all.

there is a srew on the front of the gear housing that if you loosened would have made the gear easier to come out. the only thing is you would have to count how many turns you did so you could put it back where it was. surprizing the directions didn't specify that. great to hear they are working ok. great job
