I have a 1990 convertible with the factory delco bose gold series stereo that needs repaired so i am going to go aftermarket everything.I am curious to see what others have done most likely i am going Double din (kenwood) head unit, focal speakers, JL subs and an amp for all mentioned. The one issue is what size subs and where to put them and maybe just one sub will do.Im just looking for ideas i have researched alot of audio equipment and found that what i have mentioned maybe costly but if im going to do it im doing it right. Any info or input is appreciated...thanks

I'm just finishing up a new install of a Kenwood in my '95. These articles should help: http://www.corvettemagazine.com/late-c4-corvette-sound-system-upgrade-part-1-installing-a-modern-receiver/ http://www.corvettemagazine.com/late-c4-corvette-sound-system-upgrade-part-2-the-bose-amplifierspeaker-assemblies/ I ordered everything I needed from Crutchfield, they have the harness, receiver and their technical team can be reached by phone and are very knowledgeable. Have fun.

I Just installed an Alpine HD Radio unit in mine.
I am very happy with how it sounds.
It is a single DIN unit, and I used one of the generic 1.5 DIN to 1 dash plate adaptors made for GM cars.

All interesting.  I know nothing of DIN or double DIN etc.

My 90 Coupe is all original with a "working" Bose.  Both rear speakers are bad so I'm at a crossroad so to speak.

Do I spring for rebuilt rear speakers, or send mine in for repair or change out the whole thing?  The intimidating part is the thought of rewiring the whole system due to the amount of interior disassembly.  After 23 years how much longer can the Bose last?  So, here I am thinking and doing nothing. LOL

If it isn't broke, I haven't fixed it yet....

I run a single Din Sony in my  88"  2 amps  & Bass Cap ....Thru a  solo-baric L5  12inch sub ........Sounds Great  ,But  I am going to get rid of the  2 compartments  in the Hatch and install 2 -  8 or 10inch  inch Solo-baric  subs  to get rid of the  box I have in the  hatch...... If you were to re-do the factory Bose system , You'd spent  more then you would on a aftermarket  system Cool

Double din or single din is the size of the stereo..for example a single din is usually 2"tall by 7" wide a double din is 4"tall by 7" wide and then there's the 1.5 din which is in the middle but i have decided not to repair the stock stereo due to it not lasting as long as a new one plus no warranty.Im definatly going focal krx2 and JL subs its just where to put the dam things cause today im looking in the rear where the stock speakers are and i can place 2 speakers in the back and put subs where my gigantic storage area is(just kidding i can't even put a small cooler for my beer there) plus the front stock speakers is in a sealed self contained box SO it looks like a hell of alot of fabricating that is gonna take all freakin summer. LOL prolly take a good weekend or 2 depending how much of the wow factor i want but either way its not just a stock replacement of aftermarket speakers or amps so thanks to all for the reply and i did call crutchfield on what i needed and OMG the wife bout fell over dead ...LOL but hey you only live once and like i tell her they will never take me alive...wink wink.

Bose blows. You're going to spend a pant load to "fix" it, and it will still sound like crap. The only real way to "fix" a Bose is to totally replace it. Go with a double din (just means twice the height) head unit, and the sky's the limit. They're available with pop up screens for GPS, Sat Nav., Blu Tooth for cell phone, and i-pod connections. Or, just AM/FM CD with or without cassette.  No 8-Track though. I went with a new head unit and all four speakers. WOW. I didn't do the 10 megawatt amps or the giant subs. I'm trying to preserve what little hearing I have left. You'll need to remove a seat and peal back some carpet for wiring. But, the whole run from dash to rear speakers is only like what, six feet? Big deal. Brands? Up to you. Stick with known top brands for reliability, quality, warranty etc. (Except Bose). Your ears can't tell the difference.

Fixing a Bose is like bragging that Chip Foose totally restored your Yugo.

My two cents worth. Good luck.
