Vette(s): 1988 Corvette Hatchback. Interior and exterior Black. Automatic.
When I press the yellow button for the hatchback to release on my 88 Targa sometimes it works but sometimes it just clicks and won't release.  Then I have to open it manually with the release wire.  Do you think the problem is in the relay or the motor?  Where is the hatchback release relay located?  Any suggestions on repairing the problem?

Start with the cheap stuff first.  Is the hatch release hard to operate manually?  If so, lubricate the lock assembly and striker with the factory recommended lubricant listed in the owners manual.  Next, check all electrical connections for looseness and/or corrosion.  Does the 1988 have a hatch release button on the door too?  Does that operate correctly?  That will help in the diagnosis.  I don't know if there is a relay or where it would be if there is one.

Thank you rtslt4 for your input concerning the problem with my hatchback lid not opening all the time.  I did find the relay.  It is located about 8 inches to the right of the release mechanism hiding under a piece of foam rubber.  I replaced it and the problem persisted.  I then used a test light and poked into the wire going to the motor itself.  When I pressed the release button the test light lit up but the latch release still would not unlock making me suspect the motor is not getting power every time.  I have ordered a new motor and after it is installed will contact you with the results whether the repair was successful or not.  Once again, Thank You for your input.  Macho 007. P.S. My Vette is black just like yours!

Hey rtslt4.  Just wanted to let you know it was the hatch latch motor.  Thanks again for your feedback. Macho 007

It'll maybe go again..

The problem isn't the release solenoid so much as its own poor earth. You need to fit an earth wire to ensure it operates ok.

The other problem is the small thermal switch in the end of solenoid which has 'dry' joints. Resolder this and you'll be sorted.

Don't throw out the old one as you can fix it easily like I did and posted it in images on here..
