My left headlight stayed up a half dozen times and them would return to the closed position after a short time. Now the headlight is in the up position for about two weeks now and still lights up when switch on. Is this a gear problem or a headlight motor problem?

Is the motor running continuously?
Did you ohm out the switch in the ON/OFF positions?
Is there power at the motor?

If this is on your '85, the problem is probably dirty limit switches inside the headlight motor. It's a fairly straightforward fix, after you remove the headlight motor. The motor armature shifts up or down in its bearings when the headlight door hits its limit stops, either open or closed. This shift of the armature actuates the limit switches. Clean the contacts and apply a little light weight white grease on the motor bearings to solve this problem.
I cleaned the limit switches as my rt headlight was also sticking in the open position, It stopped the problem.
but I had to replace the gears in the left headlight, as they were visibly worn and slipped, so if you are in cleaning the contacts already replace the plastic gears with the brass replacements, then you are done with the worries.
