Opening drivers door, interior lights come on. Close driver door, timer turns lights off.
Open pass door, no lights. Leave pass door open, disconnect battery, reconnect battery interior lights come on. My car is 86 convert 4+3. When I do the disconnect/reconnect the button on the back edge of the door will work the tonneau cover. Close the pass door, then open it , no lights, cover release button inop.
What is happening when the battery is reconnected.
I suspect a relay, or maybe the small board that controls the interior lights.
Thanks for any help in this area.

It's normal for the lights to come on when you connect the battery. That just means the timer module for the interior lights is working properly, as you have already discovered when you open and close the drivers door. It sounds to me like you have a defective door switch on the passenger side door. That switch un-screws from the inside of the door jamb.
The hatch release buttons in the doors are linked to the door switches. They don't want you to press those hatch release buttons when the doors are closed! (Go figure!)

Please test the switch before you spend your money! Don't trust anybody's guess! The switch may just need a little cleaning, or you may find the switch is working fine, or you may find a broken wire to the switch. Only you can determine the right answer.

Another tip, go to You Tube to see a cool trick that will save you tons of time disassembling your door when the backing plate falls off. They use a screw to replace one of the switch plate screws to hold it while you are working on the switch. Believe me when I say I should have seen that video first! Drat!!!
