Specific to 84 to 89 vettes, I'm wondering what solutions folks have come up with when they want to ditch their Bose radio and switch to a newer system, beside going to a single din unit with a trim kit

84-89 have a 1.5 din and am wondering if anyone has come up with a good way to install a double din into a console designed for 1.5 din

I have shopped for new 1.5 din radios and there are very few out there and they look like junk

I never thought of installing a double din in mine , I did how ever want to install  a Parametric EQ in the same space  & I've yet to find a kit that fits or works with a C4, A nice  double din would be nice though . Have you looked at the 1.5's that have the flip out screens ? I might get one  down the road  .......I just rather get the EQ 1st A world of difference when it comes to sound

I looked at some of the specs for the flip up screens and from what I can figure, the back of the screen will rest on the radio opening bezel and the screen will be nearly straight up and down (vertical 90 degrees). That means I'd be looking down at it at an angle and I'm betting that would make it hard to see the screen especially in daylight

On top of that, many of the flip screens are too wide to fit through the radio opening and won't clear the bezel without doing some cutting - yuck

So what do you have against the single DIN units with a trim kit?

I recently installed an ALPINE Hi-Def FM, CD with Bluetooth, and USB, yada, yada, yada. It is a single DIN unit and I added the trim kit to make it fit like it belongs.
The unit has a
terrific sound, and with the built-in blue tooth, I no longer have to wear the stupid thing in my ear, or use one of those clip on the visor blue tooth devices to use my cell phone.
In fact the bluetooth feature on this unit is so cool, it reads my entire list of contacts when I want to make a call; I can use voice dialing based on my contact list; and it displays who is calling on the radio display on an incoming call. And it is programmable so that I can have the persons voice coming over the entire sound system or set to come over just the front or just the rear speakers. What ever way I find that sounds the best. And it links to my phone virtually the instant I turn on the radio.

Oh, yeah, and I installed it in less than 2 hours, with no issues. Of course my car already came with an aftermarket unit, but it was a 1.5 DIN unit I was replacing. Apparently the previous owner already pulled the Bose unit.

Good Luck,
Rich

The old Bose head unit was already out of my '84 and a JVC unit in its place when I got it...it skipped on every bump (very annoying), so I changed it out for a Sony MEX-1GP that has a 1 GB flash drive in the head and a USB connection so I can take my music from my computer...

I thought about a head unit and an EQ but opted for just a head unit. You should make the change....you'll be much happier Wink

Rich... thanks for the feedback and I completely agree the 1" din units are packed with features and quality. The technology has really been amazing over the last 10 years. Going with a 1" din and trim kit is plan B if I don't find a 1.5" unit which at this point looks doubtful. The only reason I kept looking and asking about the 1.5" is I like the oversized appearance. I've seen the 1" units installed with the trim kits and they look fine. It's probably what I'll end up doing since the 1.5" isn't panning out

I'm with Rich.  Just replaced the Bose in my 95 with a Kenwood single din & trim kit from Crutchfield.  The single had all the features  Rich mentioned, plus Pandora and the trim kit gave me another cubby to store ipod, cell phone,  etc. Much, much, better sound, tons more features installation was a semi-breeze (Crutchfield has all the correct harnesses).  Wish I had done it years ago.

I know this thread is a little old, but I just got the single DIN adapter from Ecklers.
awesome piece made of sheetmetal not ABS.
and the harness from Crutchfield. one mod they dont mention is the extra single wire connector (pink), you must connect that to the antenna wire (blue/white) or the stereo will not power up properly.
hope my trial and error will help someone save a few minutes.
