the saying you learn something everyday is still true. was at a cruise night a couple weeks ago and a friend was telling me a guy stopped by and wanted to know how you get the clear light to come on on the rear side markers. i started to smile and was waiting for him to to say he told the guy to put it in reverse. instead he told the guy while he was laughing that there were no bulbs in there.
i looked at him like he was nuts as all the c4s i have ever seen had lights that came on when you put it in reverse. he showed me his car which is an 88 and we looked at a 94 and both didnt have the lights. i had to go to the body shop and check mine the next day to make sure i wasn't going nuts. i do have them. the donor car that is being used to repair mine didn't have them.
can't understand why they would put in a dummy light especially when the light in reverse is a good idea.

Mine do come on in reverse...
Perhaps there are state laws in some states regarding "white" lights on the sides of vehicles, so cars sold in those states simply don't have them?
Just guessin...

friend of mine said it was probably an aftermarket thing. if anything i would surmise it was an option as that way they could probably charge you a 100 times what it cost to put them in
.
still think it is a good idea as at night backing up it makes it easier to see. like the front markers when you make a turn. really can't see a law against them as they are not on all the time but then again you never know what the lawmakers are thinking.

Definitely NOT an aftermarket item....it is factory installed....

Can confirm this, my 1991 is originally from Fla and came to Sweden in 1992.
I am the 4th owner and actually changed the small bulb in the red lens, so while I was there I looked at the white one.
No splicing, all original wiring there.
All lights working, I think the previous owner was Swedish and bought the car new in Fla and took it with him to Sweden.
He also must have installed H4 lights in the USA, because they are 55 watts low beam and 100 watts high beam.
Since it is not allowed to have those 55/100 watts in Europe, he/she must have done it in the USA.
Here in Europe you are only allowed to have 55/60 low/high beam.
Drifting off a little, or what?
A total of ten lights in the front including the side markers and headlights.
13 in the rear, if you consider the third brake light being 1.
