Has anyone out there replace a front side marker light bulb?

1988 Corvette. I bought a number  194 bulb, the base of the bulb is wider than the socket. I applied a good amount of pressure, the bulb will not set into the socket. Iam afraid to break the bulb. 

any help will be appreciated

 It should just pull straight out and go straight in. I had no troubles with doing this change.

 Maybe the socket is the problem. A new socket could maybe solve the problem.
