I had to by-pass the VATS in my 88 last year....... Well I guess I could have put in a new ignition; which is the proper fix, but I figured if it broke once it may do it again.
I didn't use the switch that many of the supply houses are selling. I just used one of their resistors that comes with the right plug. Much the same thing accept that you have no means of switching back and fourth.
The big issue with using a by-pass, is now your car can be started by any key that will turn your ignition. For me that is not much of an issue. Installation is very easy. Just plug and play. You will have to determine the resistance your system is using. A ohm meter across the bullet in your key will soon tell you that. There is 15 different resistances used.
Pellet Resistance Code Ohms
1 - 402
2 - 523
3 - 681
4 - 887
5 - 1130
6 - 1470
7 - 1870
8 - 2370
9 - 3010
10 - 3740
11 - 4570
12 - 6040
13 - 7500
14 - 9530
15 - 11800

Awesome info! I have had no luck finding the resistance chart. I am not worried about the vats either. I don't have to worry about theft. I just wanna get rid of it all since its a major cause of headaches. Thanks again!

Had the same problem, a easy fix. A new car dealer or locksmith can test your key chip and let you know your resistance #. I had my key done at a dealer & locksmith to make sure they came up with same #. Mid America Motorworks had best price and service for me. I tried the toggle did not work, went to the cheaper bypass no problem since. It is awesome to know it is going to start when I turn the key. Take Care & God Bless

This is the one that I used. The one with the 3 toggle did not work. I called Mid America talked to Dewayne & he shipped out the second one that day with return postage for the toggle bypass.

Previous owner installed the bypass with toggle switch.  it works great!  you can test your key with a multitester and compare it against the chart. That's what i did when i needed extra keys.  Then get them cut anywhere and they work.  Still, the chance that the VATS will somehow get out of spec and refuse to start makes me glad i have the bypass.

Good luck!
