I want to change the transmission lube in my 92 with a 6 speed ZF.  The manual calls for 5W-30 transmission lube.  All the auto parts store guys say to just use 5W-30 motor oil because they've never heard of what I'm asking for.  Is the lube used in the trans just regular old engine oil?

Thanks,
Dan

Use a synthetic auto trans fluid, or regular auto trans fluid(Dextron III)...either will work. Most trans fluid is a 30wt viscosity...since you live up yonder where it gets just a wee bit cool, I'd say use a synthetic...depending on what it has in it now.

Mitchell & Alldata show to use 5W-30 Engine oil, not trans fluid...

Thanks for the replies.

I went to the Chevy dealer this morning and bought their syncromesh manual transmission fluid at their recommendation.  I figured that was the safest way to go and at only $25 a quart!  Did the change about an hour ago and it made a pretty big difference in the way it shifts.  'm a happy guy.

Synchromesh  is their recommendation because it's $25 a quart!
I have a ZF spec book somewhere...it gives the recommended fluids for all of their units. I'll see if I can dig that up, but...I know it's in my storage building...in a box of other books/manuals....

ZF recommends 5W-60 Castrol synth. motor oil.
Can get it at any BMW dealer.

I just put AMSOIL GL3 synchromesh oil in my ZF.  I think it's slightly better than either GM or the Castrol synthetic, but only slightly.  It's a bargain at $12/quart plus shipping!Thumbs Up
