So next spring, I'm getting my engine rebuilt. Ordered a rebuilt 4+3 from S&K Speed, so figured I might as well do the engine too. Right now, it's a mostly stock L83 with 101k miles on the clock. I'm trying to decide whether or not to get a full 383 stroker kit. I want something with a slightly lumpy idle, a lot of power and torque, runs on 87 octane. Nothing crazy, and I want it to look stock from the ouside.
Anyone have experience doing this rebuild on the L83, or can recommend a good 383 stroker kit to purchase? Any other mods recommended at the same time?
thanks!

Are you planning on keeping the Cross-Fire intake and all? If so, then going to a stroker might not produce the results you expect. The intake on those is so restrictive it's ridiculous. The intake ports are only about 1/2 the size of the ports in the heads, which means they block half of the ports going into the heads. It just chokes the engine down. Granted, the stock set-ups run fine, but they are pretty much running at their limits, as far as air-flow is concerned.
In creasing the size of the engine isn't gonna make much difference without some serious intake work on the Cross-Fire, and even then, it's not gonna do much.
There is a newly developed Cross-Fire intake set-up that is supposed to be really sweet. There's a couple of threads on that set-up here somewhere. It's won't look "stock", but it should help out much better with the stroker.

Adding to Adam's message, there was a great article in Corvette Enthusiast last year (I think summer time) and went into detail about the air flow and intake manifold. The author also had several performance improvement suggestions for the crossfire. If you're a subscriber, you can look up old articles on their web site
Have fun with your project!
Thanks for the feedback so far. I absolutely plan to keep the Cross Fire Injection. That's what makes the 84 unique, right? I was looking at changing the intake manifold, or at least porting it. I'm not concerned about the cost...if I am doing this, I am doing it once, and doing it right. I saw some people who have used the X-Ram intake, for which all of the feedback I have seen is positive. I also saw online (need to find them again) someone who manufactures larger TBI's specifically for the Cross Fire Corvettes, Camaros, and Firebirds.
I will try to find that Corvette enthusiast article, thanks for the heads up!
Look under Arizona Corvette Enthusiasts in their tech section. There is a post on having a sucessful pour on the casting.
A friend of mine is in the process of having his '95 stroked (after he already had it supercharged) at County Corvette in West Chester. You're close by, might be worth stopping by and talking to them for ideas.
They actually have some very sharp C4 guys, especially Hank. Ask for James, he can hook you up for a tour and get you to the right people.

Vette(s): Highly modified 1984 coupe. Black, red interior. 383 stroker/Dart Pro1 alum heads, Crower cam, hydraulic lifters/rockers.
I'm thinking about doing the same thing with mine. I've been looking at the 383 Stroker crate motor from EngineFactory.com. A bit pricy, but it looks pretty solid.
