You guys really seem to know what you are talking about ......see if you can figure this one out....my brother has a 1994 c4 with an new msd distributor new coil new ignition control module the car just shuts off when ever it wants to. just like you shut the key off. it may restart after 15 minutes and it may start the next day and run fine until the next time..no stored codes. the car never shifted right from the start. a chevy dealer said it was the computer based on past experience. we have been waiting 5 weeks for a computer from the dealer. any ideas why? does that diagnosis sound right. my bro is ready to sell the car but i am trying to talk him out of it. did i mention we have been waiting 5 weeks for a computer? 5 weeks!!!! and today it snows!!  please helpWits End

First question is, did it do this before the MSD system was installed? If so, then I would be looking for a connector problem, or some other wiring issue.
If it only started this after the MSD install, then I would think there was a problem with the ign module in the dist.
The Opti-spark systems have had a ton of problems, but not all of the starting/stalling/dying problems are the absolute fault of the opti-spark. Bad connections on the 84-96 cars are probably the #1 cause of failures like this.
ECM/PCM problems can also cause this particular issue, as well as fuel pump and injectors.
What kind of "shifting" problems does it have?

What prompted the replacement of the distributor, ign. module and coil?  And Joel is right on, did it do it before these were replaced?  And please more detail on shifting problem.

Thanks for the quick response guys. The problem was present before the MSD dist was installed. The distributor was replaced because when it rained or when the car was washed, it would not start. All electrical connections have been checked and double checked. The coil and ignition control module were replaced trying to solve the dying problem. Oh yeah the fuel pump and sock were also replaced for the same reason. The car has never shifted right from the start. The car would red line, the rev limiter would kick in, and still not shift until you let off the gas. It has been sitting in the shop for 5 weeks waiting for a computer. Why does it take so long to get a computer? I really want to figure out what the problem is for my brother because he keeps bugging me to sell him my 86.

[/QUOTE] Did the dealer actually diagnose the car when it wouldn't start or just suggest replacing the ECM "based on past experience" ? The thing to do IMO--when the problem is occuring--would be to check for spark at the coil and/or fuel pressure. Once you find out which is missing (spark or fuel) the factory manual will take you through fault tracing step by step. It MAY be the ECM (computer) but that's not as common as some would lead you to believe. The LT1s have a lot more trouble out of opti distributor and connector/terminal problems then ECM failure-- if it is in fact a spark/ignition problem. I've also seen some MSD opti problems recently for what it's worth. Anyway just my 2 cents.Thumbs Up
