I need to replace the engine in my '84. I found an exceptional buy on a GM crate motor, but it's the '95 block & heads. Will the '84 accessories bolt on to the newer style heads? It has a small cam, if I keep my distributor & intake will the ECM accept it. What other problems can I expect?
I'm hoping for a quick response. You would think a GM crate motor for $500 will sell quick. I'd appreciate all the help I can get.

Vette(s): one ea. 1996 LT1, red on gray interior, stroker 383 Dart heads w/ 2.02"int,1.60exeh 11.8:1, Comp Cam 230/236@50 .570/.576 113LSA , Crane 1.6:1`rocker arms, GM Delphi roller lifters HiFlo Cats, Xpipe and low restriction muffles, it sounds lumpy at idle!!!

The 84 and forward through the L98 that is in a 1990 Vette seem to be the same.  1984 is the year that Chev introduced the one piece rear main seal and also introduced  the larger flywheel  Your Vette should have the smaller flywheel or flexplate. ( 153 teeth 12.5" )I did an engine swap not long ago, the replacement came with a 168 tooth 14" +- which caused me much grief untill I understood how everything works. If your new motor comes with a flywheel other than what you have installed originally, the flywheels can be changed out. However when you find a ballance weight on the new motor flexplate?  Find out by looking at both the flexplate or flywheel and the harmonic ballance hub in front of the new motor. Leave the harmonic ballance(r) alone.(Most Chevrolet motors are externally ballanced.) Then if you need to change the flexplate you can have the correct size ballanced to the one removed from the new motor you bought. Machine shops do that sort of work, even electric motor shops should be able to do the work. JRB

Thanks JRB for the input. Unfortunately while I was doing my research the motor was sold and I missed out an a really good buy. The real kicker - I decided to run the casting numbers on the one I pulled from the '84. That tells me it already had a 95-00 block and heads. Wish I had done that in the first place. Anyway thanks again.

'84 doesn't have a one piece rear main seal.  Maybe you meant to type '94???

bob, that makes since it shuld be cheeper to rebuild the original one. good thought.  while he rebuilds the motor he could get more hp out of it toooooooo. if mine didn't have 17,000 miles on it . thats what i would do, build a bad ass motor say around 500 hp.

I started this thread in Jan. I had no idea it would get a post 6 mo later. Or that I would be checking on it 3 mo after that. Anyway Johnneyone if your read this I did decide to go the rebuild route and got carried away with building a 385 stroker (4.040 x 3.75) balanced & blue printed. The only part I kept was the block. With the bargain I got on Kieth Black dome pistons, some 66cc ported and polished heads W/2.02 Intake valves, Hydraulic roller cam W/.510 lift - 282 dur, Edelbrock dual quad intake I'm getting 11.7:1 compression and OVER 500 HP. On the advice of my machine shop I'm running Ethanol to prevent detonation.
All this when I could have slapped some new heads on the old (tired) block and been on the road in a couple of weeks.
