I've seen very few original mufflers. I think I remember a satin black. You can duplicate that very simply by painting them with Rustoleum BBQ grill paint. It stands up to high temps very well and lasts a good long time.
Speaking of original exhaust it seems at least the early C4s the tail pipes coming out of the mufflers turned down instead of straight out. Is this true? Also even though the mufflers had two outlet pipes per side only the outboard one was functional. Meaning only one functional outlet per side.
My mufflers were replaced by the the PO several years ago and although they look new on the outside all the baffles are rusted and broken inside. I was going to delete the mufflers soon but I want 3" chrome tips so I may opt for the muffler delete pipes at Mid America.
If it isn't broke, I haven't fixed it yet....

yes my tail pipes have a slight curve turning downward. the barbecue paint sounds great. I'll try it I'll get a can and only paint a sample to see if it matches or not. the muffler eliminator's they make allot of noise. i seen a couple of c4s with them on. just a suggestion, do you know anyone who has them on their car? Ive heard they make a grumble noise that is some what annoying inside the car when driving . now i heard allot of c4 owners run the magaflow mufflers. and their high performance cat-converter.
My mufflers are big open pass throughs now with rattly metal inside. I can see straight through them and I'd like the noise to be a tad more controlled. Ha Ha. I do like the loudness. It makes Mustangs think twice.....LOL

BTW that BBQ paint at Wal-Mart is around $3 a can. One can will probably paint both.

Wingnut

I have them on my 84 and they sound good all the time , no drone
My 84 that I ordered has a VIN just before 15,000. The mufflers are natural aluminumized. I keep them clean and have used some never dull wadding over time. I'm not sure when they started painting them. I originally thought that the 85's were painted when they changed the design from turn down to curve back toward horizontal.
my 84 has a Vin way before 15,000 it is 0 3575 i have look at other 84's in magazines and correct ncrs events there mufflers where black, just like mine. it would be interesting to find out when they stop painting them. my ncrs jugding book said they are black.
I know some of you with upgraded exhaust systems may snicker, but I would like to get stock mufflers for my '86 coupe. I am on my third set as the previous two sets rusted out. The originals rusted through on the outside and the second set rusted through on the inside. In both cases, they got so loud that it was irritating on longer trips.
I prefer the stock sound but have found that Mid America sells ones that have active outlets on both pipes rather than just one as the stock ones did. They were described as OEM type, but they are not.

Maybe I have a real collectible in my garage. In looking at the NCRS Judging Manual, it appears that they say the pipes should be painted a matte black color. This is not the case for my car. As I am the original owner, I know how mine arrived from Bowling Green, and it is natural metal with no paint. It is something I have never checked out on other 84's. I now have another mission.
