fastone88,
I question that the previous owner spent some $$ on the mods, and then skimped on the mufflers ... but you never know.
You might want to check out www.jegs.com since you're on a budget. Besides the Flowmasters that you don't want, they carry a brand called Dynomax. I know nothing about them. The least expensive one for your 88 is $160.00. Just enter your vehicle info on their home page. It will give you a drop down menu to choose the part you're looking for (muffler).
Good luck. I sure can't blame you for being conservative with the money. The company I worked for shut its doors a few weeks ago. I was registered and paid in advance to be in BG for the Caravan celebration this week. Had to cancel.

fastone88,
Oops, forgot to mention www.summitracing.com. You will most likely have to try several ways to narrow the search for mufflers for your 88. I had better luck by going to the list of parts on the left side of the home page. Click on "more parts" at the end of the list. Then you will see your muffler category. They had a brand called Walker, which I have heard of, but know nothing about. I think they listed for $71.00.

It sure wouldn't hurt to check your local retail parts supliers, too. Sometimes state sales taxes can be less than S & H charges for mail order.

Look for a set of used LT1 mufflers (preferably off of a 1996)...they flow decent and are quiet.
As an idea of price, I sold my used set for $50. when I put MagnaFlows on mine.
The only thing I DONT like about the MagnaFlows are the round tips.
I would of preferred to have SS rectangle tips like stock (though stock was not SS)....but I do like the sound.

Hey man.. What's up.... I have an 84... Had same issues... The popping sound turned out to be water in the gas.... Car had no exhaust when I got it... I installed KBD targa mufflers I got from Eckler's corvette parts catalog.... They sound great and only costs me about $300 with shipping.. They have a nice rumble and look great... Two 3" chrome tips on each side in the back... You wanna gimme an e-mail I'll send ya pics... I'm at Bruce4329@yahoo.com...

It could be a tiny leak in the system and its air getting in somewhere.....
