Well, it finally got here. My 86 is now officially 30 years old end eligible for a vintage tag in Alabama.
In Alabama you have to meet the following items to get a Vintage tag:
1. 30 years old
2. Car can not be used as a daily driver- parades, car shows, etc. are OK
3. $10, one time, for a permanent tag- no renewals necessary
4. You may be able to use an older state plate, if readable, and you get a vintage sticker only- same rules apply
5. Must be the original or substantially similar vehicle body, chassis, engine, and
transmission as designated for that make, model, year, and age vehicle.
I was wondering if other states have similar requirements.
Thanks, in advance, for posts.

South Dakota has something similar, but they call it a historical plate!

Who is eligible? | Any resident who owns a motor vehicle which is more than 30 years old may apply for "historical car" license plates which are permanent for the life of the vehicle. |
---|---|
Special Requirements | Vehicles displaying such plates can only be used for special occasions such as displays, parades, exhibitions, tours, and similar uses, and may be driven to service stations or garages for fuel and repairs. It may not be used for general transportation purpose unless it displays regular number plates issued by the county treasurer. Regular license plates issued by this state in the same year as the year of the vehicle (this does not pertain to motorcycles) may be used on the historical vehicle in lieu of historic license plates, but must be registered through the Division of Motor Vehicles. |
Fee | A fee of $10 shall be assessed. |

Thanks, and it is the same price as here also.
I would prefer having a normal style plate (like SD) rather than one with a picture on it, but you can't have everything.

Minnesota has something similar, only there it's collector plates. Thing is I talked to the DMV on it. They said if you take it out for a drive or to the store, technically if a policeman stops you, you could be ticketed. You can't take it on a vacation etc either.
One thing you can do is if you can find a 1986 license plate and it meets certain requirements, you can get current tabs and use that on your car.

Thanks for the responses.
I ended up using a 80's tag and got a vintage sticker for it. It looks like it belongs there,
much better than the vintage tag.
The only tag requirements are that it is legible and that the numbers/letters
are not currently issued to someone else.

In Connecticut
any vehicle over 20 years old is eligible for Historical Plates. These are everyday use registration plates. You can drive your vehicle on the road same as anyone else.
The one advantage is for personal property taxes as the vehicle
can only be assessed for a maximum of $500.00 no matter what it is really worth.
In Arkansas, the requirements for an antique tag are:
1) Vehicle is 25 years old or older.
2) No modifications other than safety of "characteristic of the approximate era the vehicle belongs to".
3) Must have another regularly-registered vehicle in your name for "daily transportation."
$) Pay the one-time $7.50 fee.
That's it. But, it is abused sooooo much around here....

Thanks for the responses- Seems like the Alabama requirements are in line with the other states.
Interesting about having to show another registration to get a antique tag- I suppose that
it to "prove" that you have a daily driver and won't be using the antique as a daily driver.

Pretty much the same here next door in Ole Miss...but the Missus won't run an "antique or historical" tag on her '81, says it makes her look old. Go figure.
