rita,
you sure can ask some hard questions
. IMO, starting with the c5s, corvettes started to look like a lot of other cars around. i would have to say that there are a lot more updated systems in there. this is going to be one of those decisions that are a lot of reasons to go for either. WAIT A MINUTE...i have the answer
. just go and buy the c5 and have two corvettes. then the only decision you would have to make is which one to drive in the morning.
.

What year C5 are we talkin here?
Personally, I do not fit in a C5,, and I do not like the "feel". I've driven many of them....just don't like them. Might be psychological, but I just never feel comfortable in them.
That being said, if I were gonna have to have one, I'd get the newest model I could afford.

Vette(s): 1992 coupe.
Custom.
If I could, I would have a C3, with all the C6, crap in it.
C4, is a nice looking, well handling vette and comfortable.
I just like C3s. Can't afford what I want, for now.
Or;
A 69 ragtop, 4 speed, big motor, no options at all. None!
I'd drive the nuts off of it. Smiling all the way.
Sorry, I just had a history throw back.
To Eddie: I can only fit 2 cars in my garage or buying the C5 just for fun could have been an option!
To Adam: It's a 2004, red with gray interior (wonder if the fact that my current Vette is red with gray has anything to do with the draw!). It has a 6 speed manual, too.
I actually drove it today and I really like it, but.... It seems like it's lower than my C4 and that makes me wonder about my taller friends. That and the fact I felt like I was hugging the steering wheel. Did they not ever intend for short people to drive a manual C5?
The reason behind my considering a newer Vette is mostly the repairs I'm having to do on mine. I have a great mechanic; I trust him and do not believe he's doing work that doesn't need to be done. He just doesn't have the space for me to leave it set until I can fix. And, I'm still trying to figure out why my power seat don't work any more and the driver seat is so worn it look tacky to me. A lot of small things besides mechanics need attention. Wish one of you guys lived close enough to work on it a bit at a time for me!
Believe it or not, one of the cons for buying a C5 is leaving you all!

first of all rita, we would never want you to leave even if you got rid of the c4. you became part of a "family" here. understand that there are many repairs even if they are small ones. as far as the seat that is worn a quick fix for now would be seat covers. wish i could be there to help you out but you have this forum here to ask as many questions as you need to. as for the seat not working, if i remember correctly the manual said if your power door locks work then the circuit breaker that supplies power is good. next in line would be to check the switch in the console. again, if memory serves, a lot of problems stem from a faulty switch. a continuity tester will tell you if the switch is good or not.
sounds complicated but as you told me you are not afraid to try and get to the nitty gritty of things. if you get stuck on something ask and we will try to answer the best we can and guide you thru it. if you want to contact via of email that is ok too. just let me know.

Rita..
I'm having the same delema myself right now....my c4 is an 88 with just about 24,000 ..it is all original sans the tires and battery with everything in working order! I fell in love with the 50th aniversary c5 in the special aniversary red metallic with shale interior....so i can definately feel your pain....I would LOVE to have both seeing how the 88 is an "aniversary year (35th)...that being said the c5 has definately improved on the electronics, handling suspension etc etc etc....parts should be a bit easier (for the time being) to obtain.Onthe other hand the c4's are becoming a "classic" now most over the 20 year old threshold .....VERY tough decision for sure.
As far as your power drivers seat...there is a fuse marked power accy...I believe it is like a 20 amp fuse...did you check that one?I recall it is separate from the seat fuse and may be your culprit....either way best of luck to you and keeep us informed!
Jeff

I have learned temptation is not a sin. It's how you respond to the temptation that leads to sin. I am resisting the temptation to trade for the C5. And here's why:
* If I trade for the C5 I'll have to make payments. I want to retire some day. If I keep buying cars I have to keep working.
* There is a wealth of knowledge from you all and I have this forum to help with small projects I can tackle myself. The bigger things I can take to my mechanic; knowing some hobbies can be expensive. I need to stop fretting about the things that could go wrong and face them only as they come up.
* My third brake light, when the brake is applied, states: IT'S A GOD-THING I could only afford a Corvette because God has, and is blessing my socks off! The third brake light on the C5 doesn't look big enough for my message.
* Then there's the fit issue. The C5 is lower and I have tall friends. Plus I'd have to get used to the idea of hugging the steering wheel in order to depress the clutch enough or buy extensions.
* I saw in one of the replies the C4 is becoming a classic. This maybe right. I took the long way home from work yesterday. I saw several C5 or newer Corvettes, but I was the only one on the road in an older Vette. I was also remembering one morning I stopped for gas and saw a C6 as I was leaving. Not only did he not wave (what's up with that?) but I noticed no one was watching him as he drove by. I did notice a few heads turn as my Corvette went by. The best part of that was the grandpa with his grandson (assuming of course). They both watched and the grandpa gave me a thumbs up as I went by.
* Then there's my license plate: 001-XYZ The first and last. My first Corvette, and my last. I couldn't put that on another Vette.
* Besides all this, I have a T-shirt on the way cause I placed in a posting contest. Now where else could I have this much fun?!!

sounds to me like you've made up your mind.......it's only natura lto second-guess or to "trade up".....stay with what fits YOUR lifestyle not that of those around you.....fall in, start in and go for a ride to solidify your decision and mostly....ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE!!
