Hey Kobra;

I started to look into the same upgrade for my '96; havent got too far yet. Since the OEM radio is a double DIN height, some interesting options appear to be out there, like touch screen Receiver / GPS Navagation units. they start around $500 and appear to go up from there.  I may need to sell a kidney...

Are you looking to exchange everything or just the head unit. I did an upgrade in my Callaway Aerobody Z. I went with a Pioneer Avic Z140BH.
You are in luck if you want to do everything. I have a soundstream system that I just removed from my 90 LPE has everything from head unit to subwoofer that was custom built for a C4. If you are interested PM me with your phone number and we can chat.

Replaced my Bose with a Kenwood.  Try Crutchfield, they have Single and Double DIN available with all kinds of options and kits to make it fit like factory (almost) in your car, plus the right wire harness.

When I purchased my '94 it has an aftermarket Kenwood Single DIN in the dash.  It was a POS unit, but it did have a nice 140 Watt amp under the passenger seat.  I kept the amp and replaced the Stereo with a Jensen DVD/Nav touch screen receiver.  It works great.

On the SYS error on the instrument cluster, the computer is checking for bad bulbs in the radio head.  When you install an aftermarket receiver the circuit between the radio and the computer is open.  You can fake the computer by installing two 1k ohm resistors on the connector that went to the original radio head (dash unit)

This info came from a posting on Corvette Central:

1. Buy (2) 1 kilo-ohm 1/2 watt resistors. [Radio Shack part # 271-023. They sell them as a 2pk for .29 cents.]  Note, 1/4 watt work too, that is what I used -- Bob

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the receiver.
4. Connect one end of both resistors to ignition power. (Yellow wire in the car)
5. Connect the other end of one resistor to the purple/white wire in the radio head connector.
6. Connect the other end of the second resistor to the grey/black wire in the radio head connector.
7. Cover all connections and completely cover the resistors.
8. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

Another thing I replaced was the stereo when I got the car (88 vette). It had a POS 50 dollar stereo in it with the ORIGINAL speakers. I replaced it with a  Pioneer avh p5200bt. It plays cd's dvd's and has a mass of formats. It will take memory cards and USB port for USB's or your iphone devices. Thing has Bluetooth cell phone touch screen rear camera a remote control as well as GPS options. I pulled the speakers and replaced them with Memphis Audio. I put the original speaker grilles back on them (as I love the old Bose ones in the back) with the new speakers in them. I had a local guy hardwire the backup camera where I could look behind me going down the road also just for fun also can see at night pretty well.
Nowadays you have lots of options with a stereo as well as replacing it with a rebuilt original. I have a lot of fun with mine and I wanted it to do everything my 2006 SRT would. It's always on (except when I want to hear the pipes). With a 32 gig memory card in it I rarely listen to the radio.

rambling again...sorry

Perry

I recently bought a 91 that had a Sony installed at the time.  The head unit is OK, but the speakers left a lot to be desired so I bought replacements.  One of the things I noticed when I got into the replacements was the prior owner had left everything but the speakers connected to the original GM box.  This allows for power and the antenna to work as they came from the factory, ie no dash light.

I did rewire all 4 speakers and removed all the 'extra' wiring he had in the car.  Now it sounds pretty good so I am satisfied.

Dr Don will install an aux input on the head, replacing the cassette drive, essentially.

You get info you wanted? I replaced my 92' with a double din Jensen touch screen. Was a challenge but got it down. Since the Bose unit is not very deep, a drimmel and cutting was required. The plugin for replacement is located on passenger side in kick panel and not under dash. That was only call out other than be ready for days of work. Replacement was well worth it as I added backup camera as well. Now have a modern, up to date system.
