to Chip or not to Chip

Vette(s): I have a 1991 Artic White, Red Interior convertible, 30,000 miles on it, & a 1993 40th Anniversary with 50,000 miles on it

   I raced my completely stock 40th Anniversary Edition at local drag strips here in the Dallas area. It runs 9.3 in the 16th mile time after time. Went all the way to the finals, consistantly beat every thing any and all wanted to challenge me with. Even out ran my Boss with his 2013 Challenger boasting he had a "Hemi". Big deal huh? I ran in the Street Muscle class.

   I have considered the idea of getting a performance chip, but am concerned about a few things.(1) By putting in a performance chip, will my gas mileage drop ? I know what vendors claim, just want to hear from C4 owners that have put a chip in. (2) The car runs strong and consistant time after time. By adding a chip will the consistency still be there or will I find the car will run better sometimes and not so other times. (3) Will adding the chip and then racing the car put too much a strain on the transmission? I don't want to self destruct because of my desire to run just a little faster.

   Would like to hear from owners that have made this change and anyone that is smarter than me, (that would include just about everyone). I am just entertaining the idea and kind of tending toward the "leave it alone" concept.

May not be smarter than you, but I put a chip in my blue car and loved it. Got a true 10hp gain on the dyno. Gas mileage and longevity of parts has more to do with how you drive. have headers, chip and flomasters still get 27+mpg at 75 to 80.

   Thanks We Gone. It wouldn't take much to be smarter than me. I appreciate the in put.  I find that when I am not sure about something, getting info based on others experience is extremely helpful.

What type of "chip" are you referring to? An off the shelf Hypertech or Jet chip, or one specifically burned for your vehicle with its mods? Inquiring minds want to know! 😊

and I since I'm considering a chip too. I've heard mixed reviews on the subject.

I had a custom E-Prom done, It was done by doing a street tune first to set all the base lines (tuned while driving under real conditions), than finished on the dyno. The off the shelf proms (chip) work well on a car in stock configuration. Once OBD2 came out it has to be done by a tuner.
