Hi everyone, I'm having trouble starting my car. Sometimes it starts and most other times, it won't. I read that it might be my VATS unit, but how do I go about checking if it is? I don't have the original keys with the chip. My car came with plain keys. I had no trouble starting it at first, but about a year after having the car this problem started. Now I'm afraid to use the car in fear that I might get stuck out there. It has happened to me before and one time it took four hours to get it to start again. Does anyone have any idea on what my problem might be and how it can possibly be fixed? Confused &Broken Heart

I had this problem with my 90 and was also told it was probably my VATS. it actually turned out to be the wiring to my starter was old and brittle and overheating. once I got it rewired I have had no more problems. You may want to check that first, much cheaper than reworking your Vats..... Just a thought...

It could be a weak battery it could be heat soak could be wiring problem it could be the starter. check the obvios first then work from there not sure on your car if it has a volt meter or amp gauge. when you turn the key it shouldn't drop below 12 volts. some batteries will show good until it has a load on it. second if it only happens when the engine is hot it could be heat soaked and it will intermittantly not start because it is siezed with heat. and like was stated earliier wiring could just be bad time and heat is hard on wiring. If your not sure most of you parts houses nowdays will trouble shoot it for you. if not maybe time to take it too supermechanic. A corvette mechanic that you trust. hope maybe this helps a little.

maybe I'm incorrect but if you purchased your car without keys with "chips" in them am I to assume your VAT system has been altered in some way? if so, maybe the by-pass is the issue? just an observation.....

Exactly what I'm thinking, too. The car has to have some sort of VATs bypass plugged in under the dash. It could be a problem with the bypass module, or a problem somewhere else in the system. I would first check for good voltage at the starter, and make sure the grounds are in place, and go from there.

I want to thank all that replied. The info was extremely helpful. I am going to start working on the car this weekend. I'll keep you all posted on what I find and if I resolve my problem.
