Anyone have a suggestion for brake upgrades on an '87 coup? Is it possible for less than $1500?

Last year I upgraded the brakes on my '87. I put 2004 model year (C5) calipers on the front which made a huge difference for the good. Now it stops like I tossed out the Queen Mary's anchor but the feel is great too. The control at the pedal is very smooth and predictable. Something to be aware of is the bigger brake hardware needs bigger wheels to clear.

My shopping list was.......

2004 C5 front calipers....$260/pair on Ebay

2004 C5 drilled and slotted rotor for front.... $160/pair

2004 C5 front pads.......$0/set (came free with front rotors)

Russell performance brake hoses (F/R)......$77 from Advanced Auto online

1987 C4 rear rotors (drilled & slotted) $110 from Ebay

C4 rear pads to match front compound ......$45 from Ebay

C5 to C4 caliper adapter bracket ~$100 on Ebay

Absolutely the best change I made so far.

Wow, very cool, thanks for the shopping list, Now I've got to decide whether to go that far or try switching out the rotors & calipers for higher performance versions or to go the full monty. You know, rotors with holes in them, better calipers, new hoses made of stainless etc etc. did you install all of that yourself? if so how difficult was it? I appreciate the help!

Does that C5 upgrade shopping list fit inside 16" wheels?

The pic in your signature shows 16" wheels. C5's had 18" front wheels. I know when we go to 13" C5 rotors on our Syclones and Typhoons we have to upgrade to a minimum of a 17" wheel, and even then there can be clearance problems.

Just curious.

NO you need 17 or bigger   I got the starting parts at a local salvage yard brake line to lug nut for 165.00 bucks   blast beaded them painted the caliper  got a set of power stop rotors and pads at Summit for 160.00  and blew the budget  whith  a set of Z06 wheels-spacers and hankook tires 18x8.5 on the front with 245/45/18 and 275/45/19 on the back

Vette(s): Purchased a 1986 Convert August 2013, Bright Red color with a black top, it'd already received a Tremec 5 speed upgrade along with a disc upgrade prior to purchase.
I'd first ask why you are wanting to switch out the brakes?  For the right reasons it can make sense but for the wrong reasons it can be disappointing and expensive.
Prior to purchasing my 86, the PO had swapped out the rotors to drilled and slotted rotors. The pads were swapped for ceramics and the rubber lines were swapped out for SS braided lines.
I'm assuming the PO may have done something like autocrossing and for that it can made alot of sense.
I do mostly cruising with it and find that when the brakes are cold it takes a fair amount of pedal pressure till they start to warm up.  Once warmed up, they do an exceptional job of slowing the car down.  Thing is most of my braking would be considered 'normal' driving conditions so the current pads may not be the best combination for my driving style.  I'm seriously considering when the pads need replacing to go to semi-metalic pads.
If it makes sense for you then go-for-it but be realistic in why you want to do it and you'll be fine.  From everything I've read, no matter whether you add newer Vette brakes or something like Baer's in larger rotors/calipers/pads, you're going to need to get larger rims and tires to fit over them

I want to make some upgrades to get about 50-60 horsepower more on the car, I figure I'd better start by improving braking performance (safety 1st). Also, when I drove the car hard around some curvey mountain roads, the front brakes were smoking, which did not seem normal to me, could be I'm wrong about that.

So what your saying is, I should try to replace the brake pads and see how that works before replacing rotors or calipers?

If you have smoking brakes, either you're pushing them hard or there's something wrong there.
HP in and of itself makes no difference, it's how you drive it.  If it was mine I'd start with what you have and go through it to see what condition it is in before planning changes or upgrades.  If you weren't driving it hard and you had smoking brakes then I'd start by seeing if everything is releasing properly.  Next would be checking the condition of the pads and rotors.  Part depends on which or whether both brakes were smoking.  If both were, then I'd suspect either both aren't releasing or (more likely) you're pushing it very hard and using alot of brakes and likely don't have the right type pads/rotors for the style of driving you do.  I'd look at the condition of the pads and rotors before going too far.  If shot, then maybe replacing with something bigger may be your best option but that depends on what you find in checking them out.  If on the other hand the brakes are working properly and the rotors are in good shape, then maybe consider looking into something like ceramic pads and see how that works out.  If ceramics take care of your problems, it would definitely be less expensive and time consuming that replacing all the brake system along with getting new tires and rims to fit over bigger calipers.

Sorry but IMO you need to start working through your issues in a logical sequence.  If it turns out to be something like the ABS pump or brake lines plugged, changing out the calipers, rotors etc won't get you anything IMO, you'll still be having problems.

My opinion.  Good luck

Hi Guys, I put an older set of 4 piston Brembos from a 360 Ferrari & overhauled them, made up brackets to suit, also fitted slotted rotors & hubs 310 mm & offset them toward the centre of the car which allows me to run the standard 16" rims, it was dearer than buying an aftermarket set however you can't buy an aftermarket caliper & rotor set up to fit in a 16" rim.
Food for thought

I was pushing the car pretty hard, keeping up with a '90s mustang cobra in those mountains and I think only one side was smoking. I don't normally push the car that hard and it'll be a rare occasion that I get to do it again, which makes me think that changing the brake pads will help a lot. But I'll bring it to a mechanic to see if that left side isn't releasing properly as well!

Thanks for the help!
