Hi,
I went to pull the wheels on my 89 today for the first tim since I've owned it. I was only able to loosen only one of the 4 center caps. I could not break the other 3 loose and I believe that my wrench is worn out. I went on the web and no one lists the wrench in their catalogs. Is there a trick to getting these loose? Where can I get a new wrench? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

are you talking about the lug nuts that need the special wrench? center caps on my 90 don't have any locks and dont see anywhere that has a center cap that locks. try searching ebay. sometimes you can find them hard to find items. another tip is if you see an item listed by a junkyard and they have a phone number listed, try calling them and they may have what you need. had to do that to get the front bumper center moulding for my 90.
hope this helps.

Hey Scott, I have a '89 also and ran into the same issue a few months ago. I searched for the "special wrench" everywhere you can think of online and 2 GM dealers. GM discontinued the wrench at least a few years ago and I couldn't find it anywhere
I solved the problem 1st by getting the special security bolt out of the center cap. To do this, use a long flat head screwdriver with a narrow shaft and a hammer. Tilt the screw driver into the hole as much as possible without touching the outer edge of the center cap. Tap the handle lghtly with a screw driver until the bolt comes loose (make sure you're going counter clockwise). It took a lot of light hits to get the bolts to come loose, but they did with a little patience. Just be careful of the outer edge so you don't mess up the center cap.
When you're ready to put the caps back on, you can either have a machine shop cut a slot in the head of the bolts so they'll work with a screw driver, or, you can find the same size Alan head stainless steel bolt in most hardware stores. Originally, I went the machine shop route and put a little grey Rustolium on the head so it wouldn't rust. A few weeks back I came across the stainless bolts with the Alan head and switched to those. My priority was not to introduce anything that would rust. Instead of having the special wrench in my center console, now I have an Alan wrench
The wheels we have were on 88 and 89 model years and a lot of folks haven't had to experience the problem with the special pattern in the wrench wearing out. Hope this all helps, Dave
Dave,
Thanks alot. That sounds like a great idea. I was really beginning to wonder what I was going to do. I'm going to try that proceedure later this week.
I'll let you know how it works.
Scott
I had the same problem with one of the security bolts on my '89 a few years ago. I drilled out the frozen bolt to get the cover off so I could remove the wheel and then I tryed a GM dealer for a replacement bolt. I gave them the code number on the special wrench but there was nothing they could do about a replacement so they me the name of the supplier, McGard. They wouldn't sell me one bolt so I had to buy an entire set with the matching key. I advise you use anti-sieze when you install the bolt. Steel fasteners in aluminum do not mix well.

RedRocket makes a good point, whatever bolts you use, make sure it is stainless
