Yes, I have stripped the clearcoat from aluminum wheels. I used Aircraft STRIPPER that I bought from a local bodyshop paint supply company. I used the gel, which I applied with a brush. I carefully applied the gel and waited. The finish came right off and I polished them out. Contrary to what people say, bare aluminum is not difficult to keep nice. They're Corvettes-we detail here constantly for shows, pride, etc. I have stripped and polished numerous sets with excellent results; sort of a dull chrome look. I now have an 84 coupe that I've been restoring for a friend. The wheels have been a real pain. The aircraft STRIPPER formulation has changed and is not nearly as strong. They call it REMOVER now I believe. It takes more time to work it's magic, and it takes multiple attempts to get a similar result. I do all work by hand and don't want to contract anything except windshield replacement. But since the change I have thought of sending the wheels off. If you decide to do this, take your time and try to enjoy it. Good luck. I hope it turns out great.
