Question. I'm going to re-seat my '92 which has standard seats. Going to buy the ones mounted on foam since the foam is crumbling anyway.

The suspension straps are also shot.

Was thinking it would be nice to replace/upgrade with Sport seats.

Are the seat frames the same?

Is this just a simple swap out?

Will existing seat belts work?

Has anyone done this?

 Thanks in advance, Dave

I've heard there is a major difference with the wiring harnesses between standards and sport.

If it isn't broke, I haven't fixed it yet....

Depends on the year.  The 6-way "power seat" adjuster is on the seat base. So these connections and connectors have nothing to do with which seat (sport or base) is installed on top of them.

84-93 with the lumbar, recline, and wing switches mounted on the seat require a 2-wire plug with B+ and Gnd  to provide power to the seat itself. Not a big deal at all. B+ power and ground for the seats can be tapped at the power seat switch in the console.

The 94-96 with the lumbar and wing switches mounted on the console will have a much more complex connector to the seat itself. (I've never seen one, can't elaborate). Plus incorporating switches for these seats into a 84-89 interior would be challenging.

EDIT: For the OP's questions:

Yes, it is a simple swap out.  As long as you use an 84-93 sport seat.
Yes, the seat belts are the same.
Yes the seats install on the same bases, and have the same bolt patterns.
No, I've never done it. My 85 came with Sport Seats. But I am familiar with the nuances of the different seats in the C4 years.

One more thing: You ask "are the seat frames the same"? Let me elaborate. After you remove the bottom cushion, you will see 4 bolts that hold the seat to the base.  Remove these 4 bolts, and what comes out is the "seat". The "base" remains in the car. The base is identical for either type of seat.  The two types of seats are completely different. (They appear very similar other than the control buttons and switches). Nothing between the two seat types is interchangeable. They are completely different.

Thanks, Dave.

Yes I've had the entire seat assemblies out to do some clean up of the carpet and remove all the years of mung, coins, pens, etc.

I really don't care about the other sport seat functions, was just wondering if I could simply put the Sport "cushions" on the Standard fiberglass seat "chair".

Oh! As an aside. I discovered a huge Chevy screw up with the bowden release cables. The ones located on the seat bottoms. They screwed up the ends that attach to the base frames.
Driver and passenger.
The molded end is upside down. There is a plastic clip that's suppose to lock onto a little dimple in the metal frame. You can't reverse it cause the other end is specific to the fiberglass seat "chair" If you remove the entire cable you can flip the seat end around and it slides in and the retainer clip snaps. But, however, the other end then won't fit the chair.
I wonder how many years this was going on!
Funny they never mentioned it. Mines a '92
