Other then the National Corvette Museum is there a way to use my VIN and find out what options came on my car?  Really wanting to know if it has the standard 2.54 gears or the optional 3.07gears?  Probably going to change them out to 3.27 or 3.45 to get a little better take off.

VIN # will not get you that information.  You can check other online places like Corvette Action or google 1996 corvette.

For this information you will need the build sheet, or the RPO sticker.

Build sheets are available from the museum, or the original may still be on top of your gas tank 9good luck getting it out in one piece)

The RPO sticker for your car should be somewhere if it has not been removed. Not sure where they put them on the 96.... try the glove box or the underside of the console lid.

Yuppers...this is where the Service Parts Label will be. It will give you all of the CODES for the equipment/options the car was built with. Form there, it's just a matter of de-coding it. Thumbs Up

what transmission? I think manual came with 3.07

Build Sheet is located behind the passenger side taillights on the 1996 underneath the gas tank strap. I managed to get mine removed earlier this winter and it was in very good shape. Although my car happens to have only 35,000 miles and always garage stored.

Thanks for the Info.  I will look in those 2 spots later today.  I really just need the codes.  I was able to find out what gearing I had and opted to go with the 3.54 gears for the car.  I have them en-route now along with a set of EMracing 1 3/4 LT Headers and a Borla Cat back exhaust system.  I also contacted Lloyd Elliott in Texas about a head and Cam package.  I was going through some posts on the internet from like 2009 and found his name.  He is still there and doing heads and cam packages for these Gen II LT1 Cars (1600.00).  EMracing also has a head and Cam package, but his stuff seems a little higher in price.  I am not sure about doing the heads, I don't want 4-6 weeks of down time waiting for them, so I might end up getting just a Cam for it and a Yank 2800 Stall converter.  If I can find another set of Gen II heads, I might just buy them and send those off to get done so the down time will be shorter, but for now I think my plate is full.  The wife got to watching me run the 1/4 mile with my Father last year and decided to see what her Vette would do stock.  I think she got the bug and now wants to go a little faster then a 13.7 @ 99 MPH.

Yes! Go to 17vin.com and plug in your 17-digit VIN. It will tell you what ALL OF the RPO codes for your vehicle are! The codes should be located on the sticker in the glove box, console lid, or in my '96, in the storage compartment behind the passenger seat. I realize this is a somewhat older post, but I thought someone might still find this useful.

Brian,
On my '96's (both of them), the RPO sticker is in the storage compartment, behind the passenger seat. I have a '96 Collector Edition and a '96 Polo Green (both coupes).

How did you get the build sheet removed exactly. I was only able to tear a piece off and gave up.

If you can't find it, or get to it, you can order one from the National Corvette Museum. I ordered one, laminated, for my '03 50th Anniversary Edition. I also ordered a laminated window sticker, even though I have the original.

I had to undo the gas tank strap in order to slide the build sheet out from underneath the strap. It took some doing for sure.

I usually take a digital photo of my RPO (regular production option) Data Code Sticker that is normally located under the center console lid or in the glove box (photo below).

Then I down load the photo onto my desktop computer and make a photo copy of it. I then take a blank sheet of paper and decode each option by hand on the blank sheet of paper using the decoder links below (the examples in the photos below are of my 1999 Pontiac Bonneville SE).

http://www.rpocodes.com/

http://www.cadillacfaq.com/rpo/index.php

There are several other RPO decoder links online if the ones above don`t have a particular code listed on your RPO Data Sticker.

This technique will work for all GM Cars & Trucks that have a RPO Data Code Sticker.

You can also take your VIN to any New GM Dealer and have them give you a print-out....but it is not as complete as decoding your own RPO Data Code Sticker with the method I described above (see examples in photos below)....I do both!

You can also contact the NCM (national corvette museum) and purchase laminated copies of your Build Sheet and Window Sales Sticker (the examples in photos below are of my 1992 Corvette Convertible).

National Corvette Museum Build Sheet & Window Sticker purchase link:

https://www.corvettemuseum.org/learn/library-archives/build-sheets-window-stickers/

They also offer full coverage auto insurance for Corvettes and Collector Cars too. My policy costs $135 a year as long as it is not a daily driver (link below).

http://ncminsurance.com/

By the way, Decoding is very, very time consuming....but is really rewarding in the end!!

Go to: http://Free-vin-decoder.com

put your vin # in there and it will give you all the information on your car including it’s birthday (no charge).

The National Corvette Museum will provide copies of the window sticker as well as its build sheet. There is a charge for this but if you want proper documentation they are the source.
Good luck and have fun!

Is your car an automatic or manual? If it's 4 speed auto you have gears on 2's. My 1987 has 3:08 and my tack reads 2000 at 70 miles an hour. I've heard the 6 speed models have a real high overdrive so I'm not sure on those.
