That's very cool.  It "runs" on compressed air. Because there is no energy-conversion taking place, its a "motor" not an engine.  Intake valve is open during the piston down-stroke, and exhaust valve open for the up-stroke.  I realize a lot of people call the thing under the hood of their car a "motor" but that's technically an engine.
