Hi there,
I am currently looking at purchasing a C4 Corvette. I live in New Zealand, where stupid transport laws mean that to register a left hand drive vehicle, I have to be able to prove that the vehicle was first registered outside of New Zealand at least 20 years prior to being registered in New Zealand.
I have found a Corvette in New Zealand that I would like to buy. The vehicle identification plate (or whatever its technical term is) has been stamped saying the car was manufactured in 1989 (21 years ago). However the papers that I have so far tracked down only go back to the car being registered in Japan in 1991 (19 years ago). Is there any way of finding out if the car has been registered before this date?
Cheers,
James

doesn't the registration in japan cover your problem? kind of crazy law to me.

Each state in the U.S. does their own registration. So without knowing which state it went to before being shipped to japan it is pretty much impossible to find. However, if the car was Made in late 1989 it could easily be a 1990 model, toss in some shipping and sitting around a little before the first buyer bought and registered it and it is entirely possible that Japan is it's first registration. On the VIN Plate located in the drivers door jam there should be another VIN Sticker which will have both the month and year of Manufacture. What is it's actual build date?

Thanks for the replies.
The Japan registration doesn't currently cover it as it is still less than 20 years ago. Ridiculous law I know.
The current owner tells me that the plate says it was manufactured in November 1989. I assume the Japan registration was probably the first registration - I was just hoping that someone had actually registered it before then, and that there was some way of tracking that registration.
That would make the car a 1990 model. It is most probable that since the car was registered in 1991 in Japan that it actually went straigt there and that is the first registration for the car. HOWEVER, since the car is already in New Zealand, isn't it already registered there by the current owner? AND if it is already registered there by him, why wold you have to go back 20 years for a car that is already there?
