Keys lost... (1/5)

I suppose it's part of getting older but I'll never admit to it. Thought I'd share it anyway. Last spring I warmed up the car, took some pictures (for my post on the fuel pump PWM controller). Two weeks later, I went to my usual spot for the keys (inside pocket of my Vette jacket) but no keys. No big deal, I must have left them in the car or bench. And so the search began but given the two week gap I could not remember what happened after I closed the car door. When the usual spots turn up nothing, to say I'm annoyed is an understatement particularly since the VATs fob is $200.,  the cards for the data logger, the reader and the GPS fob are attached in a small leather pouch.

Soon as the weather turned nice, I turned the garage inside out since I've put tools down and lost them for an hour or two. How does that happen when I just had it in my hand let alone two weeks later? Besides, they had to be between the garage and the house. On top of that the mind starts playing tricks right? It begins inventing memories of putting them some place. I even remembered thinking I'd taken them to work to change the batteries since they were due. I was kicking myself for that one too. If the batteries were good and the keys were close, I'd have had a clue because the VATS would open the doors. Then as I think about it, there's no identification with them. How would any good soul return them? Got so I began wondering if I'd left them on the bench and a squirrel with a taste for leather carried them off. It could happen....

The constant search was getting me nowhere and I was ready to look for a starting solution that didn't involve keys. Turns out Isis has the solution but $1000 for a key is a little more than I had in mind. You'd think GM would have a fingerprint reader by now. Even the remotes for the new Vettes can get lost.

Anyway, guess what turned up when a family member went to put on their winter boots? Yup, I missed the pocket, they fell silently into a winter boot which was conveniently put into storage for the summer during the two week interval when I didn't know the keys were missing. In my hunt for Christmas gifts I came across a key finder which has a buzzer and a remote to guide you to them for $39. Clearly,  I'm not the only one with the problem but that seems a little ridiculous, I'm not going to lose them again right? However, they are getting a "reward for return" note and fresh batteries. If anybody has a thumb reader key I'm ready to order...Approve

LOL

Years ago, Mama lost her car keys, which is hard to do, since she has them on a key ring with a 14" long raccoon tail. We tore the house apart, looked outside in the driveway, under the seats in the car, in clothing that hadn't been worn in months, you name it. Then, just for the hell of it....I opened the freezer door....yup. There they were....nice and chilly! Ever since then, anytime she looses something, that's the first place I look.....LOL

Glad you finally found yours....good thing you didn't have an emergency that required moving the car....like a fire in the garage!

Car in the barn and you take the keys out? Why? Can someone open your locked door?

Where do you keep your car gun? In the house?
Not joking but, my keys are in the cars and the barn door is locked.
If in the event, there is a fire, who will be able to find you keys to move the cars out?
Way back in the late 60s, a club member, kept his 66, in the garage and his bed room was over it. His vette was chained to a loop of steel in the floor.
Yep, they got it while he was sleeping.
IF, they are going to "GET" your car, you or anyone else, will not prevent it unless you are armed and in it at the time.
Be warned, it aint worth your life.

The things you don't think of and thieves do. I wonder if the odds are higher for a fire or being stolen. There was a time when we left the keys in the ignition and never locked the house either. Those days are gone. People now think a construction site is an option to Home Depot without the expense.

I had a second set of keys so I was never stranded but losing a set was still no fun, particularly with the stuff attached to the primary ones. There's a few reasons it won't start even with the keys but if they have a "tilt and load", she's going. There's a GPS tracker that would be difficult to find and will alarm to my phone if it moves but that's not fool proof either. If you make it easy for them, who you going to blame. With the drop in web based security video cameras, one's not far down my wish list. I'll take my chances on the fire since I have a sprinkler system (about the cost of a fender) and god help the guy if I catch him on the video!!! No guns but lots of baseball bats up here...
