Vette(s): 1986 Coupe

This picture was taken this past summer.  This Vette is a late production model that has the Aluminum cylinder heads that were introduced mid-year. I have owned it since 1995 and it is pretty much original except for tires, battery etc.  Everything works as when it was produced.

The building in the background is one of the last textile factories left in our town.

First thing I see is exhaust is not original.  Beautiful car. It probably does very well in NCCC events.

I've judged a few NCCC-prepped cars at NCRS events. The owners were surprised at just how "UN-original" the judges thought their cars were when evaluated using the NCRS Judging Standard. Changing a finish, changes "originality". Even if it's the original part.

The paint is too shiny, and has too high a DOI. So the paint has probably been 'modded' since originally applied, even if it is the BG applied paint. Color sanded, more clear applied and color sanded, or just had the bejesus buffed out of it to make it smooth. But it looks too smooth to be the original finish. Original paint, sure. But it doesn't appear as original paint did at the end of the BG assembly line. At least not in that picture it doesn't. Too much DOI.

"Original" is a term that has different meanings to different people. Much like "Matching Numbers" has different meaning to different people. It's a beautiful car. Enjoy it.

You are correct, mufflers are not original, as is the battery, tires and oh yes I did replace the front brake pads and spark plugs over the course of the past 17 years of ownership. So, I have edited the title to include the word "nearly".  I do drive this car in the summers and there are maintenance items.  Original batteries are not available, nor are "Reproductions" that so many "Judged" vehicles have in them so they can pass rigorous judging for originality. Original mufflers are scarce, and I do happen to have the "Original" mufflers stored away, as well as the "Original" tires. I have been a Corvette owner and enthusiast for nearly 40 years, I have had many 1st place wins in many NCCC Corvette only shows. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by NCCC "Prepped". Is this something bad? Is competing in National Council of Corvette Clubs events a bad thing? Should I be prepping a car some other way? Perhaps I should dull down the, yes, "Original Paint" or maybe add a few scratches so cars that cars that have not been maintained and cared for as well would have a fair chance to compete. I don't know, what do you think? I prep and maintain my cars myself, all of my cars! How original is a "Top Flight" car that has had a frame off restoration? Those cars are as far from as original as you can get. They are great to look at, but unfortunately those are no longer original, merely reproductions of what came off of the assembly line.

This is a forum for Corvette enthusiasts to share information and their enthusiasm for Corvettes and to promote the hobby!  It is not a NCRS Top Flight event, it is a forum.

The winds are incredible, two trees down, one just feet from ourhome.  No chance of flooding where I am, but the folks along the coast are in severe danger as the storm progresses towards the Northeast.  It's going to be a long night!

I have a friend that has an 82 Collectors Edition. he bought it new, brought it home, put it in the garage and took the original tires and wheels off and put on a set of replacements. When he goes to shows he puts the originals back on. As of 2012 (which was the last time I checked) the car only had 17,000 original miles on it. it has the original spark plugs, air filter, and every thing else except the oil and oil filter. he said he would sell it for 28,000 which for this car I would consider a real deal. I am sure there are others out there like him, but this is about the only way I can imagine a car truly being "Original". for those of us that actually drive them, well some things just gotta be changed or they wont be running anymore....
