Thanks for the feedback so far. Although the later tranny swap out is appealing from a reliability standpoint, I am going to keep the 4+3 in the car. I like the reaction of people who look at my car, and ask "what is that?". And it was funny the day I went into Pep Boys looking for a transmission filter, and the "expert" manager told me there were no 84 Corvettes with manual transmissions. I asked him to come outside and look at it, which he did, then proceeded to tell me it was not original. I then took the window sticker out of the glove compartment, and then he finally believed me. The 4+3 and the Crossfire are both good conversation starters....
The 2nd owner of my Vette did not do much maintenance unfortunately. When I bought it 9 years ago, it leaked coolant, and it took me 3 quarts of oil to get 500 miles (it leaked really bad). I knew he did not change the tranny fluid(s) in the 4+3. I knew all of this when I bought the car, but I got it cheap with the intention of working on it and restoring it back to its former glory. I rebuilt the engine, did most of the suspension, brakes, exhaust, etc....so now on to the Tranny.
I have heard good things about SK Speed so far. I know the direct drive T10 is bullet proof, but I am having both the T10 and the OD re-done. I have put the best of everything into the car so far, so I am not going to stop now. The gear oil and the Dexron mixed in the T10, and I think one of the teeth are broken, so for piece of mind, I'm doing the whole thing.
