Hey everyone,

Just curious if anyone has ever purchased a rebuilt 4+3 from S&K Speed in NY? Can anyone give me any feedback on them (positive or negative)? Or is there someplace else that rebuilds the 4+3?

My carrier bearing is going. The Vette has a loud whine in direct drive, and goes away when overdrive is engaged. Also sometimes hard to shift into reverse. Classic carrier bearing symptoms. I want to have the direct drive and the OD rebuilt sometime this spring (before summer cruising of course).

Any recommendations, or places to stay away from, would be greatly appreciated!!! And if you dont mind, how much did you sepnd? I live in Philly area, but I don't mind traveling a little to find someone who knows what they are doing.

Thanks!!!!

If you're going to buy one, SK would be THE place to get it. They are about the ONLY place that even deals with the 4+3, and they have a fairly large stock of NOS parts to repair them. That's where I get all of my parts for those transmissions that I cannot source locally.
I have built many of these turds(and I say that lovingly)...they are decent units as long as they are properly serviced, which is the main reason they fail...folks never service them, and/or they ignore the leaks until it's too late.
The 4 speed part is basically bulletproof, so there's no problems with it, normally.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Although the later tranny swap out is appealing from a reliability standpoint, I am going to keep the 4+3 in the car. I like the reaction of people who look at my car, and ask "what is that?". And it was funny the day I went into Pep Boys looking for a transmission filter, and the "expert" manager told me there were no 84 Corvettes with manual transmissions. I asked him to come outside and look at it, which he did, then proceeded to tell me it was not original. I then took the window sticker out of the glove compartment, and then he finally believed me. The 4+3 and the Crossfire are both good conversation starters....

The 2nd owner of my Vette did not do much maintenance unfortunately. When I bought it 9 years ago, it leaked coolant, and it took me 3 quarts of oil to get 500 miles (it leaked really bad). I knew he did not change the tranny fluid(s) in the 4+3. I knew all of this when I bought the car, but I got it cheap with the intention of working on it and restoring it back to its former glory.  I rebuilt the engine, did most of the suspension, brakes, exhaust, etc....so now on to the Tranny.

I have heard good things about SK Speed so far. I know the direct drive T10 is bullet proof, but I am having both the T10 and the OD re-done. I have put the best of everything into the car so far, so I am not going to stop now. The gear oil and the Dexron mixed in the T10, and I think one of the teeth are broken, so for piece of mind, I'm doing the whole thing.

It looks like I am finally getting around to this project! Made the appt at my friend's shop for him to take the entire trans out. then I will throw it in the DD, drop off in Long Island, and let SK do their thing. They are going to rebuild both the T10 and the OD unit, to keep the car numbers matching.

So my next question is.... if you had access to a lift in a garage for 2 weeks while the transmission was being re-built, what else would you change on your Corvette while you were under there? Since the driveshaft has to be dropped, new u-joints all around. Gear oil in the rear end should be changed. Of course oil change. The shocks are all new, as are the calipers, hoses, etc.... The starter is new(er). Exhaust is all new, H piped, true dual with Borla mufflers.

Do some detailing is all I can add....
Glad you're going to go with S&K on the trans....they be some good folks, at least from what little I've dealt with them on, buying parts.
Let us know how it works out.
